VDPAU using blit instead of overlay?
Few comments/questions to make.
Firstly, I noticed in every release since 185.18.10, if 'DamageEvents" is set to 'False' mplayer/vdpau crashes out with :
VDPAU nvidia: Error detected 1 610 VDPAU nvidia: Backtrace: --: /usr/lib/libvdpau_nvidia.so [0xff7000] DSO load base 00: /usr/lib/libvdpau_nvidia.so [0xffb5e9] 01: /usr/lib/libvdpau_nvidia.so [0x1004f0b] 02: /usr/lib/libvdpau_nvidia.so [0x100063f] [vdpau] Error when calling vdp_presentation_queue_create: A catch-all error, used when no other error code applies. FATAL: Cannot initialize video driver.
Anyway, onto main query..
I'm running CentOS5, 32-bit, with 190.32 drivers, with Mplayer-SVN-r29689-4.1.2, on a GeForce 9300GS.
I have composite disabled, however whenever try to play files using vdpau as the output device, I get :
VDPAU nvidia: Error detected 2 195 VDPAU nvidia: Backtrace: --: /usr/lib/libvdpau_nvidia.so [0xff7000] DSO load base 00: /usr/lib/libvdpau_nvidia.so [0xffb5e9] 01: /usr/lib/libvdpau_nvidia.so [0x100bd0d] 02: /usr/lib/libvdpau_nvidia.so [0x100b76b] 03: /usr/lib/libvdpau_nvidia.so [0x1000615]
I created a .xsession so that only xfwm4 & an xterm are started, yet still get above error suggesting it can't use the overlay.
Any suggestions/ideas most welcome.

Re: VDPAU using blit instead of overlay?
VDPAU is failing when requesting overlay usage from the X server. The most likely cause for this is GPU/system memory bandwidth restrictions. To confirm this, try running your screen at a much lower resolution.
