Unhappy Flickering below mouse pointer

I have this strange problem that the screen flickers, but only the part that is lower than the current mouse pointer position. The temporary fix is to keep the pointer at the bottom of the screen but I'm looking for something more permanent. The flickering occurs when there is a lot of graphics to refresh on the screen, e.g. scrolling through Picasa, loading a very large image in Firefox, watching a video in Totem.

I have an nVidia GeForce 8200, the latest 190.42 drivers, and Ubuntu 9.10 64-bit. The problem doesn't occur if I load the standard drivers that come with Ubuntu, but that forces me into a lower resolution. I attach a bug report log.

I'd be grateful if anyone could help because I've been searching for a solution for a long time now. Thanks!
