Default Geforce 2 mx400 and kde4

I've built an old computer for small computing req. (celeron 1ghz, 512MB ram) with that card and installed a modern distro - opensuse 11.1 with kde 4.3.2.
It works fine, however when moving windows around I get a laggy experience - areas around windows takes some time to redraw, plasma seems to be also laggy in same way.

Then I've changed to ATI rage fury pro 32MB and it was much better, there is no delay when a window is being created, however the drawing problem still exists when you drag windows.

Is there a way to tweak Xorg for such old nvidia card so it would work well with kde 4? And without effects offcourse, no need for those.

Are you using the nvidia driver or the nv driver? Even with 7600GT, nv driver has very slow 2d support.

I take it you've completely disabled desktop effects in systemsettings?

Nv - I don't think nvidia supports recent xorg and kernels in their legacy drivers.
So seems like ati is a better option.

nouveau should have okay-ish XRender acceleration.

I don't think so. Starting with the 180.x drivers, 2D acceleration is excellent.

Please see Appendix A of the README, which has a list of which GPUs are supported in which legacy branches. In your case, the GeForce 2 MX400 is supported by 96.43.*, which supports X servers up to 1.6.*. While I can't promise for sure, we do plan to support X server 1.7 in the 96.43.* series some day.

I've installed nouveau and it works very well in 2d. Just what I needed.

He was referring to open-source, nv 2D-only driver found in X.org, not nVidia's proprietary 2D/3D driver.
