Default 180.51 works, while 185.18.36 does not load

I have had a labtop running linux (kubuntu 9.04, linux 2.6.28-11-generic). Versions of the nvidia driver have worked well. The 180.51 version works well (it compiles and can be loaded using either insmod or modprobe).

The 185.18.36 compiles fine, but loading it fails. Using insmod it produces an error "No such device".

lspci shows the device is present:

00:05.0 VGA compatible controller: nVidia Corporation MCP51 PCI-X GeForce Go 6100 (rev a2)

Any ideas on what debugging output might be generated to find the problem.

More information. Laptop does not have any bios settings referred to in the output below. And in any event, 180.51 still works.

Here is the relevant output from nvidia-installer.log.

me too, kind of.

180.60 works pretty darn good
3d programs crash with anything newer

8400GS, PNY brand
Kubuntu Hardy LTS 64bit
8 gig ram
multiple 3d programs running on different desktops
