Ripping VHS's to my HD

Using my new HTPC (in sig) what would be the easiest way to rip my old VHS collection to my HD???

When you say "to my HD" to you mean, hard drive or high definition?

No not RIP them. I want to copy them and put them in my digital movie collection. On my hard drive.

I guess I'll need a video capture card?

You have the right idea, but IMO you're better off just downloading torrents of whatever movies you want to convert to digital. It will probably be better quality and take less time. Wouldn't bother my conscience any if you already own a legal copy.

Thanks, yeah that is an easier way to go maybe. But I do have some things on VHS like my wedding and other family and personal stuff I'd like to digitize. So I do need some kind of hardware.

Pirating is pirating. As much as I love some of my VHS movies, I fully intend to purchase them on Blu-Ray. It's only fair to the actors and studios IMO.

If that means I have to wait till I have the spare cash to purchase them, then I wait. Not really that big of a deal.

buy decent capture card, don't buy tuner card

i have Canopus advc 1394, great card. best thing about it doesn't require any drivers. all is build in OS. but it is discontinued.

Nice card but I need a low profile card. I won't buy a tuner. Looking on the egg now...... help needed

If you have home movies on VHS you would just record them on your DVD recorder then iso them

I guess the end result would be pretty poor though?

I've seen some Canopus devices on the egg. This one in particular. It's more $$$ but seems to have a large fan base. Just need to know if it will work with Win7 x64.
