This is fantastic, thanks for posting those instructions.

Just to add that I've got a 230m and if the edid file is missing or corrupt you see vertical grey stripes with really strange (analog looking) noise.

That's a decent work around, thanks for that.

Another question for the people with VPCCW's:
Have you gotten the backlight controls to work properly?

any ideas on how the brightness could be adjusted? I tried xbacklight and also tried noacpi as a kernel paramter... also acpi_brightness=vendor.

None of them seem to do the trick.

Looks like this can be adjusted via the nvidia-settings utility.

Unfortunately the nvidia-settings application only controls the brightness of what is displayed, not the backlight.

Cool Re: G210m Blank Laptop Display

I just want to say... egghead3... You are awsome sir/madame.

Also, does anyone know if I wanted to use a TV through the HDMI port would it be DFP-1?
Early thanks.

On my Sony the HDMI port was DFP-1. An external monitor was detected automatically, so no workarounds were needed.

Hopefully we figure out backlight control at some point. In the meantime I reduced the brightness with nvidia-settings.

Egghead3, could you perhaps by chance post a copy of your xorg.conf with your HDMI hooked up please? It doesn't seem to want to detect my HDMI even after I tried modifying my file so I assume I'm doing something wrong. It would be much appreciated if you could, if not then you've already helped me out a lot anyway and I wish to say thanks again for getting my monitor working.

I don't need to change my xorg.conf to get dfp-1 working. I can simply run nvidia-settings to autodetect a monitor attached to the hdmi port. If you just want to use the external output (and not the laptop display), you problable don't need an xorg.conf at all. Just make sure the external display is attached before starting X.

To force the external monitor from your xorg.conf you can do something like:

Code:
Section "Device"
   Identifier "Device0"
   Driver "nvidia"
   VendorName "NVIDIA Corporation"
   Option "ConnectedMonitor" "DFP-1"
EndSection

hi guys,
first of all thanks egghead3, you saved my day with your solution

now i have besides the brightness one big problem: VGA-output
( I need it for a presentation :/ )

do I have to add it like hdmi:

Section "Device"
Identifier "Device0"
Driver "nvidia"
VendorName "NVIDIA Corporation"
Option "ConnectedMonitor" "??" #name?
EndSection

because there is no output in the gnome/nvidia-settings and 'xrandr -q'
shows me just the laptop-screen (at least =) )
