Default Old files blocked.

I installed windows 7 on a new hard drive to test things out. I have my old hard drive set up as an extra drive. I wanted to access files on the old drive that was on my desktop so I go to D:\Users and when I try to open the folder with my user name its blocked. How can I get to my old files with out booting up the old hard drive and copying all the files in my user name folder to another location like the root.

Run command line as administrator:

Linux and Unixish system comes with chmod and other commands to setup/change access permission from command line/shell.

However, when it comes to windows chmod is not available. Windows comes with a special command line utility called CACLS.

You can use it as follows:
CACLS files /e /p {USERNA****:{PERMISSION}

* /p : Set new permission
* /e : Edit permission and kept old permission as it is i.e. edit ACL instead of replacing it.
* {USERNA**** : Name of user
* {PERMISSION} : Permission can be:
o R - Read
o W - Write
o C - Change (write)
o F - Full control

For example grant Rocky Full (F) control with following command (type at Windows command prompt):

C:> CACLS files /e /p rocky:f

Read complete help by typing following command:

C:> cacls /?
Use this to modify permissions. There's an option to inherit the permissions, so it should affect all files. Alternatively, you can pull up Tools -> Folder Options, then uncheck the "User Sharing Wizard" Box under View. Then right click on the folder to change permissions and add your username. Again, you must be admin.

Windows seems to say "NO! ..... Oh alright then"

Seems kind of pointless to me.
