Yeah, just imagine how many more awesome games we'd have right now if all the major engines were like this for the last 5 years.

Why can't game companies stay static?? First we have to hate Epic because Cliffy B hates the PC, then we have to like them because of a good move like this!
First we hate EA, and now they're turning things around... first we think Activision walks on water and now they're the spawn of the devil. It's too much!!! ![]() Seriously, though, considering how many different ways I've seen the Unreal engine applied, indie developers could make some outstanding work with this. I do wonder, though, if the $5000.00 is profit, or just earnings?

Shtupid WebSense prevents me to read the article, but is that release limited to India?
What about the rest of the world? Is it open source?

Just downloaded it, I dunno about you guys, but this is a pretty crappy game. I mean there are no levels, no story, no voice acting or sounds for that matter, the graphics are next to non existent.

EDIT: UE 2 was $350,000 + $50,000 for additional platforms. ![]() http://www.unrealtechnology.com/terms.php

Cripes, that's nuts. Glad they did this though, I've already downloaded it and I've got a few friends all lined up and dying to take a stab at it.
That's gotta be a good thing.

It seems to be the trend of the industry right now, id and 3d realms had started making their old stuff open source under a GPL license, and id has continued to go up the chain to their newer stuff...though they still havent released the doom 3 engine yet under GPL, who knows, might see it for christmas.
But, yes, a modern engine being released for free? Obviously it does have some strings attached, but only if you're gonna be making money off it, in which case you spent nothing and gain alot, almost pure profit. Hope this has source code at least, downloading now... |

When Rage is released, believe me it will be just as cutting edge as any of the other engines. Don't forget there have been developments industry wide with things like Screen Space Ambient Occlusion, Screen Space Directional Ambient Occlusion, Sphere Harmonics, Fake GI, SSGI, easier to use editors, improved physics support, improved post processing effects ect. Just because ID are not really, REALLY pushing the envelop Crytek style does not mean they are not serious players in the game engine industry, and it does not mean that ID Tech is not a breakthrough. Don't think there are any 60fps console games which look anything like Rage, even the CE3 footage looks a bit mediocre in that respect. I think that the ID Tech 4 (Doom3) engine will not be released as opensource or freeware for quite some time because it has undergone the same sort of treatment. Huge improvements have been done to it over the last few years to things like texture filtering, fake and real displacement mapping methods, mega textures for games like quake wars. Game engines are always being upgraded, always. |
