This doesn't seem correct, because downgrading to 185.18.xx doesn't require a reboot but yet fixes the problem, even if I boot up with the broken 190.42.

(Not to say the problem isn't with handshake and/or reading EDID, but if it is, given that downgrading without rebooting still works for me, it mustn't just happen at reboot.)

Not quite, I just tried it, I even went back to 190.36 driver version and recompiled alsa completely (firmware, library, utils) but still no luck. At this point I am not sure whats going on. Are you folks using " HDA NVidia HDMI (ALSA) " or some other device?

Ok, good -- please try downgrading to 185.18.36. Don't reboot, just restart X, and let me know if it works after that.

If so, it will corroborate what I'm experiencing.

Ok, I had to enable both internal and external codecs in the BIOS and the I loaded 185.18.36 and it didnt work even without rebooting (just restarting X). However as soon as I recompiled the alsa firmware and the driver, it started working. The last bit of the puzzle is whether or not it will work the same way with 190.42 version, I will do that test next.

You seem to have had a few more variables at play than me. Now that you've got it working, I'm curious to hear if you get the same behaviour as me when merely upgrading and downgrading just the nvidia driver.

I have solved all my HDMI issues on an HTPC I have by installing OSS v4 and disabling ALSA/PulseAudio. Now I have MPlayer, YouTube in Firefox... working flawlessly. It might be worth a try.

Does 6 and 8 channel LPCM work for you under OSS 4 and nvidia 190.xx? 6/8ch LPCM is the only thing that doesn't work (reliably) for me.

Haven't tried that kind of setup. I've got a nice 2.1 speaker set which sounds great and am very satisfied to have a working HDMI. It might work though, OSS v4 is much, much better than anything else under Linux when it comes to ease of installation and configuration.

I have ZOTAC ION board and stereo HDMI works for me but only with this "~/.asoundrc" ( found at XBMC forum ):
Code:
pcm.dmixer {
type dmix
ipc_key 1024
ipc_key_add_uid false
ipc_perm 0660
	slave {
	pcm "hw:0,3"
	rate 48000
	channels 2
	period_time 0
	period_size 1024
	buffer_time 0
	buffer_size 4096
	}
}

pcm.!default {
type plug
slave.pcm "dmixer"
}
+ unmutted "IEC958 1" in "alsamixer"

I'm having the exact same problem with 190.xx and hdmi audio on my laptop (8200M G).

And like you I can make it work by doing a rmmod on the 190.xx nvidia driver, and inserting the 185.xx nvidia module, and then removing it and reinserting the 190.xx driver.

It is like the 190.xx driver doesn't properly initialize something, and simply loading the old driver temporarily makes it work.
