No any interest from NVIDIA ? It is a major bug.
I hope the new drivers fix this. Has anyone tried ?

I think this problem may be connected to a mix of Nvidia driver version, alsa version and/or kernel version.

I have a PC running Opensuse 11.0 where HDMI audio worked with earlier versions of the Nvidia driver but stopped working after upgrading to 190.42. I am in the process of upgrading this PC to Opensuse 11.2 and have two separate harddrives that I switch between.

On Opensuse 11.2 with the same 190.42 Nvidia driver HDMI audio works.
If I switch back to Opensuse 11.0 it is not working.

Nvidia,

Please investigate this or let us at least know you are looking into it.
It appears to be effecting quite a few people now.

For now we have a workaround (temporarily inserting the old driver), but this will eventually quit working if 185.xx stops compiling against newer kernels.

As I have written earlier I think this is a combination of versions of Nvidia driver, alsa and kernel.

To sum up my experience so far:

Asus M4N78 MB:
Opensuse 11.0:
HDMI audio not working with:
htpc2:~ # rpm -qa | grep -i nvidia
nvidia-gfxG02-kmp-pae-190.42_2.6.25.20_0.5.1-8.1
libvdpau_nvidia-190.42-0.pm.1.1
x11-video-nvidiaG02-190.42-9.1

kernel-source-2.6.25.20-0.4
linux-kernel-headers-2.6.25-8.1
kernel-syms-2.6.25.20-0.4
htpc2:~ #

With pre 190.42 it is working.

Asus M4N78 MB (same as above):
Opensuse 11.2:
HDMI audio working with:
Should be the same as belove.

Asrock ION 330HT:
Opensuse 11.2:
HDMI audio working with:

I have the same alsa & kernel versions as you (on Arch), but no HDMI audio here.

The trick with inserting the 185.18.36 driver first, and then replacing it with 190.42 doesn't work for me.

Has it ever worked for you with the 185.18.36 driver? It is a pain to setup sometimes, and might not have it pointed to the right device. You have to tell your alsa-enabled program to use the HDMI sound device, or make a change to your .asoundrc to make it default.

Arch Linux (x86), kernel 2.6.31.6, alsa-* 1.0.21, nvidia 190.42.

Code:
$ aplay -l
**** List of PLAYBACK Hardware Devices ****
card 0: NVidia [HDA NVidia], device 0: ALC269 Analog [ALC269 Analog]
  Subdevices: 1/1
  Subdevice #0: subdevice #0
card 0: NVidia [HDA NVidia], device 3: NVIDIA HDMI [NVIDIA HDMI]
  Subdevices: 1/1
  Subdevice #0: subdevice #0
Code:
$ aplay -L
front:CARD=NVidia,DEV=0
    HDA NVidia, ALC269 Analog
    Front speakers
surround40:CARD=NVidia,DEV=0
    HDA NVidia, ALC269 Analog
4.0 Surround output to Front and Rear speakers
surround41:CARD=NVidia,DEV=0
    HDA NVidia, ALC269 Analog
4.1 Surround output to Front, Rear and Subwoofer speakers
surround50:CARD=NVidia,DEV=0
    HDA NVidia, ALC269 Analog
5.0 Surround output to Front, Center and Rear speakers
surround51:CARD=NVidia,DEV=0
    HDA NVidia, ALC269 Analog
5.1 Surround output to Front, Center, Rear and Subwoofer speakers
surround71:CARD=NVidia,DEV=0
    HDA NVidia, ALC269 Analog
7.1 Surround output to Front, Center, Side, Rear and Woofer speakers
hdmi:CARD=NVidia,DEV=0
    HDA NVidia, NVIDIA HDMI
    HDMI Audio Output
null
Discard all samples (playback) or generate zero samples (capture)
Code:
$ speaker-test -c8 -D hdmi -twav -l1

speaker-test 1.0.21

Playback device is hdmi
Stream parameters are 48000Hz, S16_LE, 8 channels
WAV file(s)
Rate set to 48000Hz (requested 48000Hz)
Buffer size range from 16 to 4096
Period size range from 8 to 2048
Using max buffer size 4096
Periods = 4
was set period_size = 1024
was set buffer_size = 4096
 0 - Front Left
 4 - Center
 1 - Front Right
 7 - Side Right
 3 - Rear Right
 2 - Rear Left
 6 - Side Left
 5 - LFE
Time per period = 11.330324
I don't have HDMI hardware besides my flat panel display, so I can't actually test anything besides the software part. What is the problem exactly?

It worked perfectly before 19x.xx with a properly set-up .asoundrc

Nothing I try now causes any sound to get sent through hdmi. Doing a speaker-test on the hdmi output looks like it's working, but no sound is actually sent over the hdmi link.

i confirm, the audio is initialized correctly (no errors from speaker-test -c8 etc..) but only left+right audio is sent. The a/v reciver display shows 2.0 input.

gentoo system

alsalib-1.0.20-r1
alsaheaders-1.0.20
alsa-utils-1.0.20-r5

downgrading the driver fixes the problem
