HDMI audio works for me with 195.22 on a Acer Revo AR1600-U910H.

Running Gentoo w/2.6.32 kernel with alsa built into the kernel:

cat /proc/asound/version
Advanced Linux Sound Architecture Driver Version 1.0.21.

Here's my .asoundrc (I use softvol):

Code:
pcm.!default {
    type            plug
    slave.pcm       "softvol"
}

pcm.softvol {
    type            softvol
    slave {
        pcm         "hw:0,3"
    }
    control {
        name        "Softmaster"
        card        0
    }
}
You might have to change your output from hw:0,3 to whatever your HDMI output number is:

cat /proc/asound/devices

it'll most likely be one of the "digital audio playback" devices

Also, remember to unmute IEC958 and have X started when trying to play something.

Has alot of good info

I have ALSA and PulseAudio form unstable PPA's of Rico Tzschichholz (Ubuntu Karmic: ppa:ricotz/unstable) and I could change in between analog and HDMI and optical digital otput on the fly (no need any special .asoundrc)
And moreover HDMI sound works with DVI-D output at my ION box

To people saying hdmi audio with 19x.x dirver works, please test with 7.1 linear pcm audio:
speaker-test -D hw:0,3 -t wave -c 8 -f cd

yeah, it kind of works but as I have stereo only TV connected by DVI-D then I can hear only "left" and "right" ;P

Didn't I've told that with ALSA, PulseAudio and kernel backported from Lucid taken from RICOTZ PPA's HDMI audio works on my ION?

PS: without 2.6.32 Lucid kernel and with ALSA-Pulse backported, analog audio worked in "zebra" patern ;P
HDMI audio worked all the time but I have analog stereo amplifier as my sound system ( ROTEL RA-820B ) so HDMI audio isn't solution for me ( TV sound sucks ).

if you have a stereo only tv you should hear also the voice "rear left" "rear right" "front center" because it should downmix to stereo. You have the problem too

OK, but my sound preferences shows "HDMI Stereo" devices only so I think it can't transport 7.1 signal thru stereo device... ;P

But... shouldn't it to be at least 5.1 HDMI device with ION?

This is fantastic news. I'm just happy it's even on their radar now. Being able to reproduce it is a huge first step.

Have you heard anything further from nvidia?

not yet, let's see what happens with next release. I don't think this is a tricky bug,
