This is from release notes 196.21whql, im not sure if its the same in Linux but you can get an idea what nv is doing..

Quote:
Using HDMI/DisplayPort Displays that do not Support Audio
Some HDMI/DisplayPort displays do not support audio, or have issues with current NVIDIA
graphics cards.
The NVIDIA driver attempts to identify such displays and automatically disables the
audio. For example, the NVIDIA driver disables HMDI audio for all Philips HDMI TVs,
as these have been identified as having issues with current NVIDIA graphics cards.
There may be cases where either the driver disables audio even though there is no
problem, or does not disable the audio when in fact the audio does not work. The
following sections describe these situations and provides guidance for handling them.
Corrupted video and no audio
The driver has not disabled audio and the display’s audio signal is incompatible with the
graphics card, causing video corruption.
With a different display connected in order to establish video, disable audio for the
HDMI display using the NVIDIA Control Panel‐> Change Resolution page. From the
connector list, select HDMI‐HDTV (Audio Disabled).
Video but no audio
 Check the connector list on the NVIDIA Control Panel‐>Change Resolution page.
 If HDMI‐HDTV (Audio Disabled) is selected and you want to test whether your
HDMI audio does, in fact, work, then select HDMI‐HDTV (Audio Enabled) and the
driver will prompt you with instructions for testing HDMI audio with the display.
 If HDMI‐HDTV (Audio Enabled) is selected, then the driver has not successfully
detected that an incompatible display is connected.
Future drive versions will properly identify such displays and disable audio.
 If there is no HDMI connector option in the NVIDIA Control Panel‐>Change
Resolution page, the display does not support audio and has properly reported this to
the NVIDIA driver.

I can confirm that there is absolutely no change with the new driver. With my Onkyo TX-SR-605 receiver i only get 2 channels coming out. With the old 185 series i get 8 channels with no problem.

So if the case is that nvidia driver disables hdmi audio for the devices it thinks not compatible, than how come i have 2 channel audio ? Or it thinks that my device only support 2 channels ?

Would be great to have an official status from nvidia about these problems. Also the channel mapping issue would be great to be solved finally.

+2 -- avenard repos on mythbuntu 9.10 I had driver 185.xx running HDMI to TV. I installed both 190.53 and 195.xx from Avenard via apt-get and HDMI audio breaks. Zero sound, although it otherwise looks OK.

aplay -l shows SAME output in all cases.
alsamixer is unmuted
no s/pdif
using Zotac ION ITX B-E GeForce 9300 onboard
cannot play through mplayer by specifying the hardware device=hw=0.3 anymore (mythtv breaks too)

I'm also getting just two channels with 195.36.03, where I was getting 5.1 with 185.

Don't think it is fixed.

As with the others, I too must report that 195.36.03 does not fix this problem.

In order to get reliable multichannel PCM, I still must start X under 185.18.36. Once started and subsequently killed, I can then upgrade to 195.36.03 and retain working multichannel PCM, at least until my next reboot. I should reiterate that my problem has never been with AC3/DTS passthrough or 2 channel PCM, only >2 channel PCM.

My system is connected to a Pioneer SC-05 AVR.
