This is a good point, alanw...perhaps us discrete card folks should stop this extended thread hijack. Fair enough.

Exclamation Re: HDMI audio no longer works with 190.xx releases

All my systems that I have with the old 185.18.36 with NVIDIA GPU ION (C79), started to hang randomly.

As far as I tested with the new driver, it didn't happen, but since I need multichannel with HDMI, I can't upgrade...

Please NVIDIA take part of this bug, and solve it.
Again: Multichannel audio to HDMI only outputs 2ch with drivers 190.xx (or newer), but it works with 185.18.36.

With 190.xx (or newer) only works if we update from 185.18.36 and until we reboot the system.

I have some good news everyone! Thanks to paoleary over at the XBMC forums I have been able to get HDMI audio back to full functionality in Lucid Lynx.

First, about my system:

ZOTAC GF9300-D-E motherboard
Ubuntu Lucid Lynx, fully updated and patched
nVidia driver version # 195.36.15
ALSA 1.0.23

Back before the Lucid Lynx update I had fully functioning audio coming out of the HDMI cable-- DD/DTS/PCM/etc. After the upgrade I was only able to get 2 channels working, and when XBMC was set to 'Digital' audio I couldn't get any sound from DD or DTS sources (oddly enough, my receiver would recognize that there was a DTS or DD signal coming in but XBMC would throw the old "Failed to Initiate Audio Device" error and no sound would come out). 'speaker-test -c6' never produced sound in anything other than the front-left and front-right speakers.

As a last-ditch effort I tried something from paoleary's XBMC wiki page, which incredibly got everything working again. Here is the relevant info:

aplay -l
Code:
**** List of PLAYBACK Hardware Devices ****
card 0: NVidia [HDA NVidia], device 0: ALC662 rev1 Analog [ALC662 rev1 Analog]
  Subdevices: 1/1
  Subdevice #0: subdevice #0
card 0: NVidia [HDA NVidia], device 1: ALC662 rev1 Digital [ALC662 rev1 Digital]
  Subdevices: 1/1
  Subdevice #0: subdevice #0
card 0: NVidia [HDA NVidia], device 3: NVIDIA HDMI [NVIDIA HDMI]
  Subdevices: 1/1
  Subdevice #0: subdevice #0
/etc/modprobe.d/sound.conf (this is the bit from the Wiki page)
Code:
options snd-hda-intel enable_msi=0 probe_mask=0xfff2
/etc/asound.conf
Code:
pcm.!default hdmi:NVidia
pcm:iec958 hdmi:NVidia

pcm.!remap-surround71 {
  type route
  slave.pcm "hw:0,3"
  ttable {
    0.0= 1
    1.1= 1
    2.4= 1
    3.5= 1
    4.2= 1
    5.3= 1
    6.6= 1
    7.7= 1
  }
}
The sound.conf line is what fixed everything for me. As soon as that went in I fired up XBMC and set both audio outputs to 'Custom' with "plughw:0,3" as the device. Passthrough now works correctly again, and everything is as it should be.

Hopefully this helps some of y'all out. Feel free to PM me or fire off a question here if there's any more information I can give!

Cheers,
Pete

Thanks Pete for the info.

I tried it with Ubuntu Lucid Alsa 1.0.23, Nvidia 9400 Integrated motherboard, but with no luck. I have some hda-intel module loading error (in case i insert the sound.conf line) when booting and no soundcards appear with aplay -l afterwards. Any ideas ? Has someone tried it with a 9400 integrated Mobo ?

It still don't work, with:
  • Zotac ION
  • NVIDIA-Linux-x86-195.36.24
  • alsa-driver-1.0.23

The LPCM using HDMI still limited to 2.0 channels...

LPCM grater than 2.0 ch using HDMI with ION works again with 256.25 beta driver!
At least with alsa-driver-1.0.23.

I can confirm. It works again with 256 driver and Alsa 1.0.23 with a 9400 integrated C2D motherboard.

Great work Nvidia.

Channel mapping is still wrong,but correctable with a .asoundrc file.

As my onboard 8300 died last week (the rest of the MB still works fine) I went out and bought a G210 for $45. It didn't work with kernel 2.6.33.4 (ALSA 1.0.21) but after upgrading to kernel 2.6.34 (ALSA 1.0.22.1) and adding the line "options snd-hda-intel probe_mask=0xfff2" to /etc/modprobe.d/sound.conf it works great! 6-channel LPCM over HDMI, no problem!

I knew it, Th Chow of nvidia told me once the 256.xx were going to solve the problem.
I didn't report it here because i was tired of the same answer, but i'm very glad it works good now.
