No clearly you do not. The combat in DAO is turn based, It does all the calculations in the background much like NWN and Baldurs Gate. There is a reason that an NPC dies even if its running away and out of reach because the attack was already in que even though the animation hasn't been done.

I guess it's just personal preference - I did the noble origin it had a few moments or characters that were really sad/funny/annoying etc. Plus I was pretty shocked by the ending of Ostagar.
I think you have to really try and get into it and listen to the dialogue and read everything - the more you put in...I also think the characters have the most realistic personalities of any i've seen in a game, Morrigan and Shale are my favourites. As an aside, I still can't get over the deep roads quest, it was a truly awesome adventure, exactly the kind of thing I play these games for. The fact that it was really hard made it even better.
