This right here...

... defines a turn-based game to me.

I have had so many arguements over semantics with game genre titles I guess I should know better than to dive in head first, but for me Dragon Age is obviously turn-based, and that is that. Others can define it how they wish, though I must ask if it is not turn-based, how do you seperate it from Diablo or Oblivion? Those are stat-based, yet completely different.
I understand where you're coming from.

And as I said before, I see a game like this as a real time game with a turn based rule set. The inner workings of the game are turn based but the gameplay is real time and the turns are mostly transparent to the user.

The stats and every other aspect of the game have no bearing on whether its real time or turn based. For example, Pocket Tanks is turn based. Worms is turn based. Jagged Alliance, Fallout, Ascendancy, Civilization... All turn based but very different kinds of games.

So basically you feel the turns must be player initiated to be a turn-based game?

This is not a turn based game. Turn base means "taking turns" when fighting. AKA Final Fantasy. This is nowhere near turn based.

Does it matter whether it's turn based or not?

Which this game does, they just are not initiated by the player.

It's a tough job, but I feel I do it with integrity.

That would be one way, for sure.

The term is just too vague though honestly.

Lots of things are based on turns but I've only ever heard the term "turn based" used to describe a game that noticeably waits for player interaction for each turn.
