Default Fade AVI Video to Black at End

I have an AVI file that I want to fade the last 3 or 4 seconds to black at the end. I'd like to fade the video and audio at the same time. Is there any free software that will do that? If not what software do you recommend? Thanks!

The current video is using the XVID Codec but I can chage that if necessary.

I use VirtualDub now and will take a look at it again to see if it will fade the video. I looked at it before I posted my question and couldn't figure out how to do it. I just loaded it up and will try again.

EDIT: ( After playing with VirtualDub again )

I took a look at VirtualDub again and couldn't find a way to fade the video, but then I realized I hadn't done a search for a PLUGIN for it. I found one called FadeFX and it fades the video to black but doesn't work on the audio. So what I'll do is split the video and audio to separate files and then do fade out's on them separately, and then put them back together. I wanted to do it in one pass but this is free and will work. I already have something that will fade the audio. So thanks for getting me to look at VirtualDub again

But WLMM doesn't handle other formats rather than Windows Media ones, although he stated that he could change the video compression method if necessary.

On the other hand, yes, WLMM offers some nifty features, like YouTube video uploading, now that's cool, but for pure video processing, VirtualDub does a much more professional work, so it depends on what he needs

I would use AviSynth.

The script you'll need for that is below.

Just copy it into Notepad, replace the duration and path to your file, save it with a .AVS extension and open it with any directshow compatible media player (almost all are, except VideoLan) to check that it indeed does what you want. You can also open it with VirtualDub for encoding.

Oh, and you'll need to install aviSynth for this to work, of course.

Code:
# Replace 3 below with the duration of the fadeout you wish, in seconds.
FadeOutDurationInSeconds = 3

# Replace "C:\Users\MyUserName\Desktop\MyVideo.avi" below
# by the full path to your avi video file (including its name)
Video = AviSource("C:\Users\MyUserName\Desktop\MyVideo.avi")

# This computes the duration of the fade out, in frames
FadeOutDuration = round(FadeOutDurationInSeconds * Video.FrameRate)

# This fades out
Video.ConvertAudioToFloat.FadeOut(FadeOutDuration)

Thanks for the script. I'll take a look at iAviSynth. I've already done the avi file I wanted to fix, but there's always next time.
