Default Is it worth it?

Hey all,

As you can see from the specs in my sig, my machine's getting pretty long in the tooth (especially in the gfx department).

My question: is upgrading to a GTX 275/285 worth it at this point if I game at 1280x1024? Are there going to be any games out there that really push the limits (other than the infamous crysis) of what my machine can do anytime soon, or would an upgrade be somewhat of a waste?

Help?

I would wait and get a DX11 card at this point, but as to the game question there are several games I cannot max, but it depends on what you want from them and what res and settings you need.

If you are one of those people who don't care about AA, or because of your lower res, then you might not need to upgrade. Still, lately games have been demanding more and more of my system and I would say an upgrade would definately benefit the average gamer with an 8800 right now.

But again, I would get a 300 series or 5000 series at this point.

Hmm, any idea when the 300 series nVidia cards will be out? How much faster will they be compared to my 8800? To a 285?

Early in the year I believe... personally I am getting some money in January and if there is no word yet I am going ATI.

As for how fast they would be compared to a 200 series I don't know, but one expects a decent bump as well as DX11 support, which it seems like might actually mean something this time due to all the love and attention given to Win7, as well as the fact we may see a new console before too, too long.

It's a judgement call, obviously. There are reasons to wait but if DX11 matters little or not at all to you then a 285 or even a 275 will give you great performance right now, much improved over the 8800.

Thanks, NarcissistZero. I think I will just wait to see what nVidia comes up with for DX11 and then get that (or the generation after that). I can last until the next game console at least before upgrading, since games are pretty dependent on the console cycle anyway.
