Please stop this discussion as Nvidia will NEVER release ppc linux drivers. First there's no real market for it and second it is not easy to port it. It is not just recompiling the driver but lots of ppc code would be added. You might say that there are drivers for OSX and that OSX is close to linux. That's true but those drivers are maintained by Apple and not by nvidia. Nvidia gave apple access to their driver source code.

Further even buying Ati cards for linux ppc is becoming quite useless as more recent models based on the r3xx/r4xx code aren't supported in 3d, so you get max some radeon9000 like card. (radeon9100=9000; 9200=8500 ..)

Amen. 50 - 70 % performance loss under Linux. Continuous freezes. That's what ATI Linux support is. Switched 5 Radeons away, no going back.

Two questions:

1: Has anyone asked Apple for comment on the issue? Most PPC desktops are made by them (Unless you figured out how to get an NV card into an RS6000 or IBM iSeries)

2: How difficult would it be to make a module wrapper for the Apple PPC xfree driver (it is a BSD kernel module)?

Thank you for your time,
Frank Russo

Another angle you may wish to explore is to contact someone in IBM's pSeries workstation department. Their PPC workstation cards are IBM made, and I would be curious to see how they would comment on the request for an Nvidia AIX5L or Linux driver so that a consumer card would work with them.

Thanx muchly,
Frank

I bought the 12" PowerBook G4 not realizing that it came with an Nvidia graphics card that is not supported in Linux. Now I am returning it and paying over $500 in restocking costs to get a 15". Needless to say I am not a fan of Nvidia right now.

Someone should work out how to get the OSX NVidia driver to work under linux. It would require a big effort, but should be doable...

Remember, we actually use windows XP wifi drivers under linux for those annoying closed source cards...

For the sake of completeness, I recieved the following from the Terrasoft YDL team.

Quote:
Nvidia is simply not proactive with support for PowerPC Linux. ATI is coming
forward now and beginning to work with us, but as it stands, not a great deal
has been done to date. We have very limited support (2D only) for most Nvidia
cards.

Love to help, but not certain if we can demonstrate a business case strong
enough to cause them to offer binaries or open-source drivers.
Looking forward to hearing from IBM and Apple.

Thank you for your time,
Frank Russo

You should never say never :-)

I can imagine that there are chances for a OpenGL ppc driver for linux
running in a virtual machine on top of a PS3. However, i guess this
driver won't make it to non-PS3 platforms ...

I'm doing a lot of linux kernel porting for embedded PPC devices. Unfortnuatly,
drivers that have never been tested on big-endian platforms usualy make
troubles because the developers didn't took the endianess conversion into
account. Sorting out this issue can take quite some time and depends on
the complexity of the driver: nvidia.ko is bigger than the kernel image ... not
even mentioning libGL, libglx and nvidia_drv.o.

Although i would realy like to see PPC drivers, i can very well understand that
nvidia decided that it's not worth the effort to do a port on their side,
especially in case if the majority of ppl would like to operate their G3/G4
Macs which integrates "old" nvidia hardware.

I also very well understand that nvidia doesn't release specifications of their
latest chips because they fear that their competitors could reverse engineer their
genius recent implementation . So an alternative would be to release specs of GF4
and maybe an old GF4 linux driver source code tree (1.0-3xxx?) - this would
at least make half of the PPC linux users happy.

But i guess this is not an option for nvidia: I think, non of the video
card makes is releasing the specs of their products, because they fear that
the competitors could find out that there are (mutual) patent infringements.

So unless ATI, nvidia, Matrox, intel, etc. agree on not getting after each
other for patent infrigements that are older than 3 years (or any of
the company is dying), there won't be any specs for old hardware.

regards

Bernhard

ATI does it. Why nVidia can't?
