Xinerama + nVidia

Hi,

I run a dualie athlon box on a Tyan Thunder K7. I have a GeForce3 (Asus V8200). It's not a Ti200 or a Ti500, it's the original (which is somewhere in between I think).

Anyhoo, the Tyan Thunder K7 has onboard ATi graphics. I got a 15" monitor for free a while back, so I thought I'd hook 'er up and see what I could do. I got Xinerama working with 3123, but it seemed unstable, in that the system would crash hard every day or two if I left it in X. Also, the sound on my SB Live! would crackle whenever something on the onboard screen was updated.

I upgraded to 4363 yesterday. It totally doesn't work with Xinerama like this. I get display corruption when I start X, and then X crashes after a little while. If I try to start a 3D app, like Quake3, it's extremely slow, with lots of corruption. Then after about 10 - 15 seconds it will lock the system hard.

I understand this is a very peculiar setup. Still.. it seems like what I want to do should work. Does anybody have any ideas or experience with this? For the moment, I'm using the 4363 drivers without Xinerama, and that seems to be ok (although it's only been a day now).

I am running Gentoo linux, with the Gentoo kernel. I have tried the drivers with vanilla kernels, however. I boot with

"mem=nopentium noapic"

passed to the kernel.

Another question: if I go out and buy another nVidia PCI card (like an old TNT2 or something) will I be able to use that with Xinerama? I'd really like to use my 2nd monitor. Ideally, I'd rather not replace my GeForce3, since I'm happy with its performance and I only need 3D on one display.

Errr, so nobody has any ideas about this? It'd be really great to know if anybody's been able to successfully do this kinda thing.
