[EDIT: thread title should say "... HDMI -sound- out ..." This post is only relating to linux HDMI sound output with the ion chipset]
Hello, I am just about at my wit's end here trying to get HDMI sound output in Ubuntu linux 9.10 / karmic koala. I am confident the hardware works as it was working with HDMI out in 9.04. I would revert to 9.04 but for the fact that a bunch of other stuff was not working (the least of which was not my wireless connection) there and so am hoping someone here can help. I am still trying to get my head around the nuances of linux sound, and the relationship between pulseaudio, ALSA, OSS and others less prominent. I'm not sure I'm there yet. My understanding right now is that ALSA is about the closest thing to a windows sound driver as I can grab a metaphor for. On that assumption, I've been trying to work up from using the alsa utilities alsamixer and aplay. The problem is simple. There is no sound coming out over HDMI. None. Even using aplay to play a wave file. Inexplicably, there also no errors at all, anywhere that I've found. I have managed to get stereo out over the headphones off and on in the course of this, but I'm really not that interested in that and have not been working towards that. Right now, I have: Code:
me@varie:~$ aplay -l **** List of PLAYBACK Hardware Devices **** card 0: NVidia [HDA NVidia], device 0: ALC662 rev1 Analog [ALC662 rev1 Analog] Subdevices: 1/1 Subdevice #0: subdevice #0 card 0: NVidia [HDA NVidia], device 1: ALC662 rev1 Digital [ALC662 rev1 Digital] Subdevices: 1/1 Subdevice #0: subdevice #0 card 0: NVidia [HDA NVidia], device 3: NVIDIA HDMI [NVIDIA HDMI] Subdevices: 1/1 Subdevice #0: subdevice #0 me@varie:~$ Code:

Just to report, I did manage to get this issue fixed - somehow. In the process of giving up on Ubuntu, I downloaded and tried XBMC Live. Although this did not work, in the process I had to completely power-off the Revo machine and also tightened the HDMI cable a bit. While XBMC Live did not even boot, when I rebooted back into Ubuntu again, the sound was fixed.
Frustrating, I have no idea what fixed it, so I have no idea if the fix will stick around. I'll just keep my fingers crossed and avoid complete power-downs. |

I got my acer revo sound working over hdmi by adding the line
pcm.!default hdmi:NVidia to etc/asound.conf, as detailed in this post Still can't get flash sound to work over hdmi though ![]() Sound over hdmi is handled via the screen rather than the sound card I guess. If you leave sound settings as default and plug some speakers into the sound out jack then you will hear the audio. |

In Karmic add this to "Software sources"
Code:
ppa:ricotz/unstable Code:
sudo apt-get update sudo apt-get upgrade
