Default Sony considering monthly fees for PSN?

Nothing is official though but, it's a possiblity that PSN will see a monthly fees sometime in the future. From Sony's CTO Masayuki Chatani:

Quote:
Servers and the like have running costs, and we would face difficulties if our business depended solely on the sell-and-forget model. After we sell the hardware, though, we continue to sell products such as content and services. We expect to see considerable growth in digital content, such as game download services, avatar items and the like. We can also accept payment in a growing number of ways. In addition to single-payment packaged software, there are also schemes like monthly fees or per-item charges. I think this variety of payment methods will bring about a diverse range of playing methods, too.
This wasn't first time the idea of monthly fees was bought up.

I believe they are talking about other services that they can charge a fee for, much like Qore and that other thing they offer. I dout they would ever go XBLive and charge for actual PSN usuage.

Sure, but where do you think the games and videos you buy on PSN come from? Pixie dust?

Besides, you still need servers to decide who is the host in games and manage the connections.

No, There are actually a few games on PS3 that use dedicated servers. Resistence 1/2, Warhawk, Killzone 2, MGO, Socom and I think a few others. A few of them are even player run where a user can set a PS3 to be the server (and he can't play then). Basically its a closed off dedicated server using the PS3, not a PC.

Heres the warhawk servers...

It sounds like they are going to do what XBL already does. You can download a bunch of stuff for free but the good stuff is via subscription. So they are going XBL .

Doubtful. My guess is they might charge for new additions to PSN, like maybe cross game chat or something. But I seriously doubt they will add a subscription fee for actually using your own internet connection like XBL does.
