Only reason I see is money.
Windows 7 is easily same speed as XP and even faster sometimes( marginaly ). I am using Candidate win7 64bit and can't complain really. WEll it takes over 10gb of space and uses around 500mb of memory. |

Bout the only thing MS has going for itself these days is Bing. Their OS's seem like ball and chain anymore. Not that I dont have hope for MS. But, I am happy to see more dev's supporting OSX.
On an XP machine now. Doubt 7 will ever see the light of day here.

I will be upgrading to 7 somepoint in 2010.
I just like XP, it hasn't let me down that much over the last 3 or 4 years. And to be honest i STILL dual boot it with 2000 because in the begining XP was so unreliable for me i used 2000 to fix everytime it crashed. ![]() |

Anyone who didnt get 7 on pre-release is a mental.
Unless you get it for free like students or whatever.

I'd just like to note I still have windows 3.1(Actualy I think the disks are screwy, but I definetly still have DOS 6.2 and 6.0). If I hadn't gotten a comp with anything higher when I was in highschool. I would still be using it. And when I get the chance I'm going to plug it back in and use it again. 8)
I would take an updated and modernized DOS over windows anyday..... why can't you get everything setup in windows to work in DOS. There isn't anything critical that requires a GUI. And you could always get a modernized and hopefully lite windows 3.1/dosshell for other things(hell a multimonitor version would be great. One window the CLI another the GUI. Could you imagine the startup times!!!). Or just run whatever in 3d mode like we used to with games. 8) Guarantee of software support of a seperate monitor for every application. That would teach those hardware companies how to do things. Start passing out the ports!! 2-4 monitors my butt!! |

I don't know why they're still on XP...
I find that over 4gb is almost a necessity now with applications and games that I'm running... That alone is why I'm off of XP (yes, 64-bit XP existed... but not in the minds of driver developers, it's a mess and never will be successful). DX11 and the ability to use homegroups for device sharing in my apartment was enough incentive for me to not use XP anymore. It's just too limiting of an OS now that legitimate alternatives exist (7.... not so much vista) People are probably just stubborn or not a power user with no reason to upgrade. I know alot of people who use their computer all but once a week to check email and weather occasoinally, or movie times, etc... I know for us that's hard to imagine but I can see how windows 7 is the least of their concerns

Also for the reasons outlined in my post above.... 64-bit XP gets crap for support from vendors so you are then limited to 4gb if you want a stable XP install. Simplified networking through homegroups, not to mention wireless cards just work with windows 7... for the most part. Every build I've done with windows 7 so far has immediately picked up the wireless adapter and used it without special drivers. Not to mention 7 and vista load some applications significantly faster with the pre-loading of commonly used applications through the memory management pre-fetch system they use. ... Yes, there's no reason why someone with ~2gb of memory who isn't gaming with a dx10+ card should upgrade. But that's honestly not going to be a majority of people moving forward. Don't down-play the importance of DX11 either. It hasn't been realized yet but OpenCL and the use of video cards as a gp-gpu outside of their proprietary APIs (stream / CUDA) is going to be a great boon to the performance computing world that can't be realized with proprietary APIs. Granted I'm sure the people who are interested in things like this wouldn't be running XP any longer anyway...

I am supporting over 100+ machines, and the vast majority of them are still on XP. There is a learning curve for some of the staff members, so I can not just up and take them off of XP without a little training first. That's the hard part. Most of the staff are not apt to learn new tech, they just want to be able to do their job and move on. I'm not going to try and fix something that's not broken.
As old machine break down, I will replace them with new machines and Win7. |
