Arrow My experience with HD 5970

Finaly I got the HD 5970 and I'm excited about it. Here I'm going to share few pictures and game benchmark. This time of the year is very busy for me, too many Christmas parties to attend so I'll post many more game benchmark later on.
Please feel free to post your own benchmarks in this thread to compare, mainly I would like to see how the HD 5970 compares to HD 5870 Crossfire at same GPU and CPU clock settings. I decide to run all the benchmarks with OC GPU 850MHz/1200MHz which is same as the default speed for the HD 5870, my CPU is OC at 4GHz. All the benchammarks are with Catalist 9.12 unless otherwise stated.

The card needs 12.1 inches inside the case.

Plenty of room in the Cosmos S case, with about 4 inches to spare.

My set up

3DMARK Vantage score P25589, with my previous HD 4870 x2 to highest score I ever got was P17937, see the link in my signature.

Heaven Demo v1.0 benchmark DX10, the other setings as per attached picture

Heaven Demo v1.0 benchmark DX11. The DX11 takes a big performance hit in this benchmark.

Crysis GPU Benchmark
Run #1- DX10 1920x1080 AA=4x, 64 bit test, Quality: High - Overall Average FPS: 78.45
Run #2- DX10 1920x1080 AA=4x, 64 bit test, Quality: VeryHigh - Overall Average FPS: 52.37
To compare, the highest average with my HD 4870 x2 DX10 settings - High: 45.89 FPS, settings - Very High 30.72 FPS. Very nice improvement, check the HD 4870 x2 benchmarks here.

Crysis Warhead Ambush Benchmark
DirectX 10 GAMER 3X @ 1920 x 1080 AA 4x, FPS: Min: 47.43 Max: 92.11 Avg: 72.67
DirectX 10 ENTHUSIAST 3X @ 1920 x 1080 AA 4x, FPS: Min: 34.68 Max: 65.78 Avg: 51.55

S.T.A.L.K.E.R.: Call of Pripyat, Medium (DX11), MSAA 4x, 1080p. Here the DX11 is faster than the DX10

Reserved by Heinz for more games benchmarks.
EDITED April 25, 2010

Decided to re-run the STALKER CoP bench with Ultra High setting.

Driver used Catalyst 10.3a, using MSI AfterBurner the HD 5970 was OC to 925/1240. The i7 980X was clocked at 4300MHz.
After setting the GPU OC with the AfterBurner I didn't run it in the background, I noticed slightly lower FPS with the Afterburner on.

Here pic of the advance ultra setting used in the following bench.

One more bench with all ultra settings as above except for the "Use DX10.1 MSAA for A-tested objects" set to Off.
The frame-rates are better, the run was same smooth and I DEFINITELY could not notice any different in the IQ when running the bench.

NOTE
Strange how the Day FPS are exactly the same in the above benches and also same in the DX11 medium setting I run December last year, different driver and GPU OC plus not the same CPU (see post #1).

Awesome! Congratulations on your new card and thanks for sharing your experiences.

Besides performance, have you noticed other differences with the HD 5970 like for example temperature or noise?

Merry Christmas.

I have the card since December 16th. I installed it without taking any pictures. Last night I finally had some time for this short review so I removed the card to take some fast pictures. Than I reinstalled the card, power up the TV/Monitor and computer to take some more pictures but forgot to reset the underscan. It was quite dark in the room when taking the pictures with flash and I didn't noticed it till I started to use the computer again, than I did reset it but didn't bother to take new pictures.

Here is a picture without underscan which I took now.
Were you able to fix it on your TV? Anyway I don't think you had any problem with underscan on desktop.

I wasn't able to fix it completly. Crysis still underscans but with a different scaling setting on the TV I can minimize the underscan but still keep a sharp and clear picture. But it's not fullscreen like Windows or other games. Since Crysis is not important right now, it's ok this way. Luckily other games work and scale perfectly so far with the TV. That's a big one since I'm not trying Eyefinity after all. The card is a keeper! At least until Fermi's release, then I'll have to decide what to do.
Have you tried manually adding 1080p60 from your display manager? My friend couldn't force 1:1 pixel mapping, but that did the trick(disable underscan afterwards).
