Default Huge performance boost with 195.30 and KDE 4

Hi,

this isn't exactly a bug report. Well, since I have installed 195.30 on my gentoo box, I experience a constantly high performance with kwin and plasmadesktop. There must be something seriously wrong.

- No more resizing sluggishness
- Permanent 60 fps
- No stuttering

on a 8800GS (G92) on a x86_64 core 2, twinview with 3200x1200.

Anyway, thanks to the nvidia-linux team for your good work ;-)

Now if you only could get this randr 1.2 into the driver... :-)

I can confirm this - I have been affected by sluggishness when resizing the terminal in Xfce/openbox, when having composite on and a transparent background, affecting both Xfce4-terminal and urxvt - with 195.30 this sluggishness is gone, which I guess is related to this in the driver changelog:

* Enabled GPU acceleration for many RENDER compositing operations that were previously processed in software, including conjoint and disjoint blending modes and component alpha blending.

Thank you nvidia devs!

Thumbs up Re: Huge performance boost with 195.30 and KDE 4

I can confirm the same here. Nvidia G86 [GeForce 8400M GS] on laptop Pavillion 6880.
Plasma now works like a charm.
When it works, it works.
An this, really deserves a huge THANKS to all Nvidia team.

also in gtk i noticed an increase of about 30% of performance (without using compositing).
thanks

For some reason, nvidia-settings -a AccelerateTrapezoids=1 doesn't work.

'AccelerateTrapezoids=1' (Unknown Error).

It requires a GT200 GPU (works fine on my GTX 285)

Oh that's just great. NVIDIA now are forcing us to upgrade our GPU, just for performance boosts on our composited desktop.

Maybe they are just testing this functionnality or maybe older graphic cards doesn't support the way they use to accelerate trapezoids

That's right, it doesn't work with sufficiently high quality on older GPUs and you wouldn't like the results if it were enabled. No conspiracy here!

I should mention that it works not only on GT200, but the entire GT200 family of processors, including Ion.

Well that's good, but why can't older GPUs accelerate KDE4 smooth enough?

Window resizing and such operations are much, much slower than their Windows counterpart drivers. Each driver seems introduces some new command line option for speeding up such operations.

Is this area complicated compared to accelerating more complicated games with OpenGL?

Just out of curiosity, what graphic problem does it cause? I was under the impression that all 2D rendering on 8x00 and up was done by the 3D processor, and all of the =>8x00 cards are OpenGL 3, so it seems like they should have basically the same feature set.
