Default Can't build the NFORCE 410 Audio Driver

I have a Gigabyte Motherboard with GeForce 6100 graphics and nForce 410 Audio. On my Debian Squeeze installation I have successfully downloaded and built the graphics driver (which implies it has found the kernel headers correctly) but when I attempt to build the audio driver it fails with an error that doesn't make sense to me.

Here is the output from /var/log/nvidia-nforce-installer.log

nforce-installer log file '/var/log/nvidia-nforce-installer.log'

suggestions on fixing installation problems in the README available on
the Linux driver download page at www.nvidia.com.

It seems to be implying that it can't find the kernel headers in /lib/modules/2.6.30-2-amd64/source but they are definitely there (indeed they were used to build the graphics driver). I haven't specified any special parameters for KBUILD_OUTPUT (I called the script without any additional parameters).

I am lost as to what to do now. Any help appreciated.

I had not realised there was a standard audio driver for this device - I think the module is loaded but I do not get any sound.

The output from lspci is below

Default Re: Can't build the NFORCE 410 Audio Driver

The line:
Code:
MCP51 AC97 Audio Controller [10de:026b]
says everything.
You have AC97 codec and should use intel8x0.c driver.
The
Code:
alsaconf
command should autodetect your AC97 codec as:
Code:
Intel/SiS/nVidia/AMD/ALi AC97 Controller
or AC97 codec or Intel8x0.
If not try to
Code:
modprobe snd-intel8x0
Then
Code:
cat /proc/asound/cards
to see if your codec is working
Then use
Code:
alsamixer
to unmute audio which is silent by default by setting everything about 50% of volume. ESC key to exit.
Then use
Code:
speaker-test -c2
to test config. If you will hear loud hiss in left speaker then right and again left. Press Ctrl+C to quit testing.
Now you can play some music.
Finally use alsamixer to mute audio on connectors you do not use to reduce hiss.

P.S. The nvaudio/nvsound drivers are for SoundStorm audio processor present in nForce1/2 only. Later nForce chipsets nForce3-410 use simple Intel AC97 codec. nforce 430 and later have more advanced Intel HDA.

Default Re: Can't build the NFORCE 410 Audio Driver

Thanks for the reply

I got it working - not because the sound card wasn't working, but because it was detected as the second sound card, with snd_pcsp being the first (and therefore default) card.

I blacklisted snd_pcsp and now alsa picks up the ac97 as the default card and all works well again.
