This explains why I am observing a different behaviour with xrestop, because I am not using the default decoration. But slowdowns still do happen for me, easily reproducible with wine:

Start some application using 3D graphics (for example, WoW), switch to another virtual screen, switch back, notice the decrease in fps, repeat.

Either wine and kde are both slowly coming to a grinding halt. Now switch to the linux console, switch back - everything is ok again.

But this may involve bugs in wine, kwin or wow and seems to be a different issue.
