You won't be disappointed Drolfrawd.

If this helps any...

Outside of gaming, I notice no difference between my i7 920 (stock) and Phenom 9600BE (stock). I do not include gaming cause right now I'm sporting dual 8800GTXs and only 4GB of RAM, while my Phenom 9600 rig had two 9600GTs and 8GB of RAM. Furthermore, gaming is more GPU than CPU bound in many cases- thus I don't consider that to be a fair basis for CPU performance.

But multi-tasking and such my Phenom 9600 BE seemed everybit as fast as my current i7 920. Unless you're running benchmarks or such, I really don't think there is a noticable difference between the two in most cases.

There are a great selection of AM3 boards, all of which are under $200. If you're not into Crossfire, you can get a great board for around $90, and you can get a fantastic board for about $110 and above. You can't even come close to that with Intel's X58 currently.

That's one of my choices....I have heard good things about gigabyte boards...plus the dual bios means no more cmos resets if your o/c settings don't work. Mind you modern boards are pretty good at still managing to post...not like back in my DFI NF2 Lanparty Ultra B days...where I had a spare chip just incase.

That board plus a 125W PII 965 will do pretty damn well. Not I7 fast...but fast enough...especially @ 4.0ghz

I expect to see a build thread soon

If you're ever interested in going Crossfire then go for this instead (16x + 16x):

http://www.ebuyer.com/product/158607

Otherwise the only advantages may be a few overclocking options in the bios as well as the better cooling that may or may not help that little extra. So you can save the money going with the 790X over the 790FX but if you're overclocking to the limit and have crossfire as a future possibility it may be worth looking at the 790FX.

I did some research before recommending the 790X boards

http://www.techpowerup.com/reviews/A...press_Scaling/

Even on the 5870 more than 8X is pretty much pointless.

The 790X boards offer most of the features of the 790FX at about half of the price...since both the gigabyte and the asus boards can be had for ~100 CAD and the 790FX versions of both boards are over 200 CAD....

Good info either way, I recommend everyone check out the review I've posted opens your eyes about PCIE lane widths.

Cheers,

JC

I have an intel quad but if I had to do it all over again I would have stuck with the 965be I had originally purchased. If for no other reason than I'm not getting anywhere near the use out of this chip that you should because I never buy expensive video cards, and the platform has serious longevity.

I have used Intel CPU's for the last 4 or 5 upgrades. I have used AMD CPU's in the past. So I really don't have a preference either way. I usually just buy whatever is the fastest.
