If the price comes down the next consoles might have SSD, Sony wanted to do that or cloud storage for the PS3 Slim but cost was too high.

Yeah but who will do GPU's? PS3 sold 27 mln... in 4 years. While DISCRETE GPU sell in only 2008 was something about 120 mln. Nvidia just shoted in it's own leg. They sold some cheap 7800 gpu's for PS3 but those who bought PS3 will not buy their next few generations of chips like 8800GT, 280GT and upcoming Fermi. Why sell cheap gpu's while you can sell expensive high end chips? I think it was one of their worst decission ever. They sold an apple but they cuted the tree.

Consoles are basically modified PCs so at release they are always as fast as the fastest computer on the market(or almost as fast), but the devs are better at optimizing their games for the hardware as it's the same for everyone. That's why console games running on 5 year old hardware can rival even the best looking pc games of today.

Really like the idea of being able to switch out the HDD to fit your own needs. It also helps to keep cost down. I just want the next generation of consoles to have enough RAM(shared 4GB would be nice).

companies are stooping trying to develop their own components and just use pc components.

Maybe since RAM is becoming dirt cheap but 4GB isn't really needed...

Nekro, They will probably always have hardware designed for the console because a) will help stop people from altering their consoles and b) will give them more control over their hardware for piracy concerns (Thanks to the custom BR Drive in the PS3 the PS3 is still piracy free).

But the hardware will probably be based off current PC Hardware.

Yes I've said this before in dozens of threads, but nobody has the vision... consoles shouldn't exist, there's no point to them anymore. Look at Microsoft and Sony, how many millions have they lost writing off hardware that they've been selling cheaper than cost to make when they can cut their losses, create software to run their games, and let a third party make the hardware.

I think the original XBox was going to be made by HP, but there's no reason that MS couldn't make an XBox OS, let hardware manufacturers sell 'certified' XBox hardware (meeting minimum requirements, and then adding 'add-ons' to increase prices or entice people to their brand). MS could also sell the OS separately for PC, and they could license the hardware manufacturers, license the OS, and sell the games... all while getting out of the hardware business. Win-win-win.

Edit: Adding this since you posted before I hit submit I think that the future won't be BD, DVD, or even CD... it's going to be online. Online download, online activiation, online-everything. Certainly people will still buy their discs if they want to, but if the next gen of consoles doesn't have online activiation and the linkage of games to accounts, I'd be very surprised. This kills two birds with one stone: Piracy and Used Sales \ Rentals.

Yup, it will still be a while before packaging completely dies but we will see many more online exclusives and more importantly packaged games will probably be linked to an account on consoles similar to Steam games on PC. This will kill the used game market and prevenst some piracy and offer more control to the companies.

It also means, like MMOs on PC, once the company shuts down the servers you can never play the game again. On PC at least the system is open and modders can make Portal work one day even if Steam is dead and gone, but console games really could become completely finite.

I wonder if console gamers will accept all this, but then I am sure they will. If this generation has taught me anything it's that they NEED to have stuff and will buy it despite the loss of consumer rights and value.

I wonder how much a console would cost if all of the cost that goes into preventing piracy would be subtracted for the overall cost of development.

I must say that the console business is pretty peculiar in the sense that the manufacturers are basically selling you a PC re-badged as something else with worse features than a regular PC and are making money off of it. The funny part is that the game developers are also getting the bad end of the deal as they're subjugated to bad APIs and SDKs and whatnot plus extra licensing fees. Apple are doing the exact same thing, selling a specialized PC marketed as something else.
I'm not trying to diss consoles or console-people in any way(but to you apple people - BURN! ), but looking at something critically can sometimes just be an eye-opening experience as to how gullible we all really are. Heck I've owned almost every console since the 8-bit versions of Sega and Nintedo were launched.

Hardcore PC gamers are starting to move to multiple/super widescreen panels, and I dunno about you, but even 1080p, isnt as much as my 1920x1200, and many people have 30" monitors with 2560x1600 or whatever it is.

As I am pretty sure I said before, the only thing consoles win at is controller innovation, and so far, ease of setup, though I remember my NES, I plugged in a cart, popped it down, pressed power, got the little nintendo logo then I was in the game, from a brand new never before used console, now they all go through an initial setup procedure, much like PCs, granted its still simplified compared to PCs, but in the end, as everyone has mentioned, consoles are just gonna be static-pcs
