Default Thoughts on new Gigabyte AM3 Mobo's?

I've pretty much been handed a Phenom x2 550 and 4 gigs of ram for free and have a buyer on craigslist for my current board/chip/ram.

So long as the sale goes through tonight I would just need to buy a board. I was pretty set on getting an Asus board but I saw gigabyte has 2 new boards out with sata 3.0 and USB 3.0 as well. Can't really seem to find any reviews on them.

What do you guys think?

I realized I don't really need a really high powered machine as I'm just not into spending $300 and up for a video card anymore.

Both boards support acc so if I end up with a free quad cool if not oh well. I'm not really that interested in the xfire abilities of the more expensive board, I just like the sata layout better as well as the motherboard cooling.

Don't know if thats really worth the extra money though.

Thanks

I'd get the 790X just to be safe....I've never had good luck with the lower end of the chipset spectrum boards.

Even if you don't use X-fire as least you'll have had the option....with the other board it's plain out the window.

I have three computers with the 780G boards and have built several rigs with that chipset. Its been really solid, no problems. I wouldn't worry about quality. AMD has done a pretty good job with its motherboards. They've been much better than nvidia chipsets I've owned in the past.

Yep, my Asus 780G has been rock solid. Wouldn't hesitate to use another AMD chipset board. The onboard video is also surprisingly powerful.

I have the MA790XT-UD4P and it's been good, except for one minor limitation on ram voltage.

That one. In between the both in pricing with pretty much everything the more expensive XTA offers. No point in spending over $115 unless you want an 790FX.

Sorry just noticed the SATA3 and USB3. Unless you plan to keep the board for quite a while not really worth it IMO. They aren't using the best controllers but it's better than nothing, so if you want USB3/SATA3 down the track then the extra money might be worth it I guess.

Realistically I would like to keep this set-up for 2+ years. I'm hoping that AM3 will have longer legs than 1156 and that the 6 core chips are actually a decent upgrade so if I decide to really get back into hardcore pc gaming again I can buy a powerful 6 core.

So thats my main reason for wanting to get a board with sata 3.0. I understand that the controllers won't be as good as the intel/amd ones when they come out, but they will certainly be much faster than just having sata 2. I plan on getting an ssd sometime this year and when sata 3 ones start coming out it would be nice to be able to hop on that train.

As far as core unlocking goes, is it true the x2 550 has a better success rate than the x3 720? It would be neat to get a quad for free. Will remind me of my days with my 9500pro.

Well I decided to go with the normal gigabyte 790xtud4p instead of the sata 3 version since the 890x will be out in a few months and I may be tempted to upgrade to that then anyway.

On a side note the processor I was given which I thought was going to be a x2 550 was actually an x3 720 which I just unlocked to a quad.... nice! Gonna do some stability testing overnight. I'll report back to tommorrow with a status update.

Good to hear about the x3! Best of luck with it being stable as a quad.

The Gigabyte boards are very stable and reliable. The second one is a great board. You will not be disappointed.

Still going strong. 1 thing though is that I can't get realtemp to monitor the processor temps as it doesn't know what the chip is. Any other good software out there that can tell?

The OCCT testing program seems to have the most accurate temperature and voltage readings of any program I've used. I don't use any background monitoring programs because its a waste or resources, but OCCT is just about the best piece of software a tweaker\overclocker can download IMO. Not only will it totally annihilate your system if you want to run a serious stress test, it will give you accurate information about how your system is responding to the torture. It also offers some more realistic stress tests for those that don't want to melt their system.
