X fails to start with any driver version - GeForce 9400 GT

I desperately tried to get the drivers running on my x86_64 Ubuntu 9.4 machine.
Tried installing versions 180.44, 173.14.16, 96.43.10 and 71.86.08 but always ended up with a black screen and the monitor switching off right before the login screen would appear.


Attached is the output of the bug report tool, but it seems like the logs in there are from the boot where i restored the vesa driver.
