Some guy that got it early (legally he showed a picture of the box and what not) is streaming it live. Pretty awesome. He just released Grunt from the tank.

1) I own it, you are leasing it.
2) I get collector's packaging and extra items like a behind the scenes DVD and booklets.

That means I get more than you for the same price. If you don't care about either of those things that's fine, but that does not change the fact I get more than you for the same price, it's a fact.

Is that why you made that comment about not using Steam anymore?

Says who. According to what valve has stated in the past if they were to ever go under they would provide ways for people to continue playing their games (actually most games work without steam running)

All I lack is the packaging... which is the reason I choose NOT to get the retail version. I still get the extra behind the scenes videos and comic and art books.

You do not get more then me, end of story. I know how you love to hate on Digital Distribution because you get to "own" the game but thats meaningless. A company like Valve wont go out of business anytime soon and as long as your not a dib**** you wont have your account banned.

No matter what some employees say on forums the ToS says they can end your service at any time and are not obligated to keep the games running in any way. Also even if they do that it would likely be for Valve games only because a patch like that would require publisher authorization.

You not caring about what I get in addition does not make it not exist, it's pretty clear cut I get more whether you consider it useless or not. This isn't an arguement, just say you don't care about the "more" and that's fine.

I just don't like the idea of Valve controling my games anymore, I want to control my access to them. Large companies have gone down before, tons of times, I just don't like it. If it doesn't bother you then that's fine... it DOES bother me.

Yeah, I have been giving a lot of thought to digital distribution and account based ownership lately and have decided the consumer is losing out much more than is worth the convienence. I still support Steam for download-only games and great deals where the negatives are outweighed by the awesome prices, I just bought AvP on there for instance, but when a game is the same price as the retail version? And the retail version has no DRM past a disc check? Retail all the way baby!

I don't expect this stuff to resonate with others, I am just expressing my opinion. Most people don't play games past the year they come out, but I do. It only came up here because I thought some comments were amusing is all.

Almost all the games I play now are many years old, partially because they don't always work right away in wine.

I'm not a big fan of Steam, but I'm more comfortable with it now than when I first installed it along with Half-Life 2. I remember being so irritated to have to deal with Steam. The thought of losing access to my games because of some screwup on their end or a network problem on mine kept me up at night. In fact, I'm sure I waited a good 3 or 4 months before buying the game because of the Steam requirement, and that was tough to do with everyone raving about HL2. The only games I have in there now are HL2, the episodes, and Portal. I don't mind buying games retail and then linking them to Steam.. It's handy to be able to install the game that way if you ever lost or damaged the original media, but I'd much rather have a copy that didn't originate there.

I've seen plenty of headlines about music and mmo services going away, taking your purchases with. That's not something I want to deal with.

Totally agree with you buddy.

Steam is an excellent service, but its just that... a service.

For games that I'm likely to want to play at some point far into the future, I stick with retail boxed games, or at the very least DRM-free downloadable games that don't require activation.

If Steam had a reliable way to backup my entire account onto my PC, so that I could restore the backup and play any game without needing to be online, I would feel much more comfortable. From my experience though, some games will randomly say that they need updating or that they cannot be played offline, even if I've done a full backup of Steam and all of the registry entries.

Also, I like boxes, manuals and bonus content. So I get more out of a retail purchase than a digital one.
