You guys are too paranoid. Steam isn't going anywhere anytime soon. They are the digital distribution market leader. And, honestly I don't give a crap that there's a chance my copy of ME2 won't work in 2030. I'll bet money right now it will though.

No drive to the store, no sales tax, no disk required, no risk of a damaged disk, no re-installs ever, games always ready to run...

You know my original Thief I CD is scratched too badly to play. I can't get the disk replaced - Looking Glass is long gone. That was only 10 years ago. The 20 year argument isn't valid to me.

You can ignore the issue all you like, the fact remains Valve controls your game collection, not you. If it doesn't bother you then congratulations, but it DOES bother me. It's not JUST about the game being there to play in 20 years, though that is a concern and I don't know how you can brush it off so easily, it is also about today, right now, who grants me access to a game, me or Valve?

I don't know about you but have any of you tried to play old games with latest graphic cards? They just don't work (messiah game, sacrifice, mdk, giants, etc). So I don't think it'll matter, plus pc boxes are going to completely disappear of store shelves within 2-3 years.

I am now the proud owner of ME2. Thank you Bioware, Steam. Originally I'd say Dragon Age was my most anticipated game of the year, but I think ME2 takes the cake (yeah I know they are 2009 and 2010, respectively but they are being released not too far apart). I don't think I've ever played a game through as many times as I did with Mass Effect.

Pre-ordered the boxed version. Steam was 15€ more.

I like the fact that it allows to install a game when- and where ever you want without carrying around the disks.
I'm hoping that the retail version is compatible with steam. Already have mass effect on steam and if I've understood it correctly you'll be able to continue your progress from ME1, right?

All those work except Sacrifice, which works but not on max settings I believe, though I haven't played that one myself.

I play old games all the time, more than new games probably, and the only one I own out of like 400 games that does not work is Metal Gear Solid 2, and that's because of modern sound cards, it can work without sound.

Must have missed that somehow.. Good to know! Gonna play through it once more before my ME2 copy gets here just to freshen up on the story.
