Never ever let Windows download/install updates for you. Always check it to download first and let you install them. That way, you can review the updates before installing them.

you were lucky to just lose your place in the game. I lost a LOT of important stuff (had backups but they were about a week or two old) when my win7 machine at work rebooted and I had burned an image disk for a customer.
Machine rebooted that night, came in the next morning to a freshly imaged machine! Thankfully I've got a copy of the get my data back software that works wonders.
