Default I want a decent overclocking core2

I want a decent overclocking core2 for my retired p5b-deluxe now that I've sold its Q6700.

I'm thinking e6300, but whats a good (possibly cheaper) alternative?

Should I just stick with that as a replacement?

The PC doesn't really have a use ,I just don't like to have a PC without a CPU in there.
I might sell it.

If it supports the Pentium Dual Core E5200 that'd be a pretty decent chip.

The P965 chipset is getting pretty old now so I don't know which CPUs it supports or how high it can overclock, but its worth looking into.

I have one of those boards in a secondary rig with a Core 2 E4300. I had it overclocked to 2.4Ghz (from 1.8) for a while.

An E8400 would cost me about the same as my Q9550 did.

The E6300 is still looking like the safest bet.

I'm guessing you've found one used for a good price.

I haven't seen them for sale in years.

Unless you can get one for less than $50 I wouldn't bother. An E5200 has a 633Mhz clock speed advantage right out of the box, has a much higher multiplier (less FSB overclocking needed) and they can be had for around $65.

EDIT: Doh. Just remembered that they actually released ANOTHER E6300 recently at 2.8Ghz, where as the old one was 1.8Ghz. Why they did this, I have no idea. That's probably the one you're talking about.

The 2.8's e6300's are 45nm "Pentiums", I thought 2.8 was a misprint or something when I saw them on eBay

Seems like a good chip
