Thanks for the reply. The noise is constant, it occurs whenever the backlight is not running at maximum (after changing brightness using the nVidia driver). I do not experience this with Windows or when I switch in VT. I'm going to round up some t510 users in other forums to confirm this. I hope that the nvidia driver is only using non-optimal brightness graduations or "steps". It sure would suck if this was some sort of complicated issue with the backlight resonating with the LCD when using certain timings . It is an LED backlight though, so I bet this is less likely than it would be with CFL.edit: I added this xorg.conf stuff to ThinkWiki (a Linux wiki for ThinkPad Users). Users have already posted comments that confirm this issue. |

I came here for a different reason, but these xorg additions allow me to have backlight control with my Lenovo Y450 laptop with GT 130M graphics. I learned of this after submitting a bug report with ubuntu and googling the "RegistryDwords" stuff that was suggested there

Did anyone manage to boot a Fedora 13 alpha live CD (or later daily built) on a W510 with a FX880M?
I get through the grub countdown, then some nouveau messages on the console. Then the Fedora screen with the Fedora logo in the middle and there it's stuck. |

The high-pitched noises are still present on my W510 with the "RegistryDwords" "EnableBrightnessControl=1" method and 195.36.24, though the buzz might have gotten a bit softer.
Ubuntu Lucid amd64 / kernel 2.6.33.2 Still using the switch to VT / change brightness / switch to X workaround... |

SSE, thanks for confirming this on these forums, I was worried that the references to this issue on thinkwiki were just copies note I originally posted there
![]() I started a thread here: http://www.nvnews.net/vbulletin/showthread.php?t=150069 on the 15th, i'm going to bump it now. |

I've been trying to get a ThinkPad T510 so that we can take a look at this issue, but haven't been able to get my hands on one so far. In the meantime, could somebody provide a dump of the ACPI DSDT table for one of these machines? Run the following as root:
acpidump -b -t DSDT -o DSDT.out #this dumps the DSDT table to "DSDT.out" in your current directory iasl -d DSDT.out #this disassembles the dump file and produces "DSDT.dsl" Thanks |

Thanks for the dump, sse. We'll take a look and see if there's anything obvious there. In the meantime I'll continue looking for one of these laptops.

I found out this is related to vt-d being enabled. at least that's how I worked around it on my W510 |

Brightness works fine here without adding the DWORD after disabling vt-d too. (T510)
