I was planning on maybe getting a couple of theses on launch....but no way will I pay an extra $200 for slightly better performance.....are they out of their f**king mind

Would also mean that what charlie stated performance wise was indeed correct all along.

It is stated that dual gpu Fermi is made up from gtx470.

GTX480 as fast as 5970

A 5970 is about 2 times faster than a gtx285,so the dual gpu Fermi will be about the same speed with gtx480 in good scaling conditions. It may exceed gtx480 near perfect scaling conditions.

So it doesnt make sense to make a dual gpu card which is as fast as their single gpu card in most cases.

My conclusion about their "rumor" is :

That's the confusing part though.....From what we know, the GTX470 has 448 shaders,a 320 bit memory bus and likely lower clocks, and it's about 25% faster than the GTX285 right?

The GTX480 cards has the full 512 shaders(14% more than GTX 470),the full 384 bit memory bus(20% more bandwith than the GTX 470),and it's supposed to be twice as fast as the GTX 285 cards, and aproach the HD5970.

They're suggesting those relatively small changes account for a 75% performance differencial between the GTX 470 and the GTX480 cards, when the baseline is the GTX 285,and that's just a little bit too wide of a gap for such small changes overall.

Yeah i agree on that, there is no way there will be that much performance gap between gtx480 and 470,i think.

On the other hand, you could be right that the GTX470,being 25% faster than the GTX285,that Nvidia might be able to pull off a dual GPU card using a pair of those, and match or beat the HD5970 cards, since the scaling on games suited for SLI/Crossfire setups, the performance scales from 75~85% from 1 to 2 GPU's usually.

The question comes down to how much power does each GTX470 use in the end?,assuming it can't be done with GTX480 chips since it looks like it uses too much power to allow a dual GPU card anyhow....Isn't speculation awsome...:P.

Maybe those prices are right, although I've not seen a pre order for PNY.

If those are anywhere near accurate..well, I hope they aren't. I'll be staying with AMD for some time to come.

I have paid premium for NV GPUs for as long as I can remember...600, 700, 750...with ATi's pricing, temps and TDP, how can you not go with them.

Now if the GTX480 out performs the HD5970 then I guess the price is warranted...don't forget the HD5970 msrp is $599, so what can the 480 do for the extra $80 ??????

True Lee, but my decision is based more off of personal limits I've set for myself and my hobbies.

I'm also buying a truck, a boat, 10 windows and several doors for the house this spring..fishing poles etc etc....Have to cut the budget somewhere

@Facebook

Nice

Uhm, does this mean that everything we read about prices on the internet is speculation (better word -> fake) or ?

We'll just have to see what the final prices are like, see the performance of the cards and compare that with the competition in about 30 days from now.

Nvidia have set the bar pretty high by claiming it'll be releasing the fastest gaming cards on the market when the launch happends, yet the funny thing is that even in the Nvidia provided slides, they compare Fermi against the HD5870,and never make a mention of the HD5970 in any of those slides at all.

Interpret that as you wish.

here they are:

Here's a link for the comparison chart over at the tech report, between the GT200,GF100 and the RV870 chip, assuming the GTX480 hits 725Mhz base clock speeds.....Scroll down towards the bottom of the page:

http://www.techreport.com/articles.x/18332/5

You'll notice that only in memory bandwith and in fillrate, the GF100 does beat Cypress, and that in order for users to buy tesla cards, the dual precision floating point capabilities that the GF100 is capable of,is cut to 1/4 on the Geforce versions,so Cuda users/developers are basically encouraged to buy the tesla versions, being much more expensive obviously....Texturing speed is way down from Cypress though.

Again, assuming they hit 725 Mhz on the GF100 core for the GTX480,it beats Cypress by 25% on fillrate, and 30% on the memory bandwith thanks to the 384 bit memory bus.

Memory bandwith is pretty constant regardless of the speeds that the Core ends up operating at,but will they hit that 725 Mhz clock is the question?....
