Default I know nobody really knows but is a GTX480 going to be faster then a HD5970

I have read that a GTX 480 is faster then a HD 5970 ,and I have read that it is around 5% to 10% faster then the HD5870,which one is closer to the truth.

You just have to wait a couple of weeks to find out for yourself, which I would strongly advise.

Right now, I could tell you that a 480 is powered by radioactive gerbils and the 5870 is a bionic midget and that may be as accurate as some of the rumors around

I messed up my numbers ,what I was trying to say is a GTX480 going to be faster then a HD5970 or is it going to be a little faster in games with a HD5870.

I think it will be 10 to 20% faster than the HD5870...no one knows anything about the 5890 yet.

I will get my numbers right in a little while I meant a HD5970 or two HD5870x2 and do you think running two HD 5850 in crossfire will be faster then one GTX 480,Sorry about all my confusion of numbers. If I can get two HD5850 running in crossfire and overclocked to 825/1.2G(4.8g effective) for about $ $560 ,would'nt it be faster and more cost effective then one GTX 480 for around $700,that is if you can find one. This is just my opinion.I would love for the GTX 480 to be as fast as a HD5970 for $700.I can see why they want release the clocks for the GTX 480 in two ways ,one if they release them, because then ATI can just hurry up a board with a overclocked HD5870,But I also think if nvidia card was that much faster then they would'nt mind releaseing the numbers,so I think the 5% to 10% faster then a HD5870 sounds about right. But I could always be wrong.I just think ATI has won this round at least until a die shrink or nvidia remakes a card, but it has always been that way Nvidia will be on top for two or three years and then it will turn around and ATI will be on top for a couple of years. It does'nt manner to me I just want the card that is the most cost effective.I never really had any problems with nvidia or ATI drivers.I like the layout of nvidia better ,but that because I have been useing nvidia the most here lately. But I do hope they have more cards for launch then I have been hearing, because if they don't have but 8,000 to 10,000 boards then very few people will be able to get one.

You mean will the GTX480 out perform ATi's dual card the HD5970...right ? anyway I don't think it will, I would be first in line for two even if it matched it.

The numbers don't add up to that conclusion:

GTX480
512 shaders at 1.5 terraflop single precision and 750 Gigaflops dual precision.
48 Rops,clocking in at 34 Gigapixels/sec(at 725 Mhz).
64 texture units at 46 Gigatexels(at 725 Mhz).
384 bit bus with about 200 GB/sec of memory bandwith.

HD5970

3200 shaders (1600 per GPU) for 5 terraflops single precision and 1 terraflop dual precision.
64 Rops,clocking in at about 46.4 Gigapixels/sec total.
160 texture units at 116 Gigatexels total(bilinear filtered, half that amount in FP 16)
256 bit bus X 2,for 256 GB/sec of memory bandwith in total.

I'm fully aware that crossfire will never scale to 100% even in the best case, but you're asking Fermi to basically do more performance wise, while having a lot less to work with in terms of hardware resources,so it would have to be a lot more efficient overall in the overall architecture to even think of pulling that off, regardless of the theoretical maximums being a lot lower.

To put it into perspective, neither card has enough memory bandwith to get even close to hitting the maximum fillrate that the GPU's themselves are theoretically able to produce...Just as an example.

The HD 5870 isn't faster than a GTX 295 as well, I think a single GPU card beating a dual GPU card performance wise won't happen so easily these days. Fermi may be a great new start, but it won't really shine with the current 40nm manufacturing process.

has there been any hints of what the power useage is going to be ,will it take two 6 pin PCIe power plugs or two 8 pin PCIe or one 6pin PCIe and one 8 pin PCIe power plug.Or is it just to early to know right now.
