Unhappy 9800gt VDPAU issue

I am having trouble getting VDPAU working with my EVGA 9800gt. Currently using the 195.36.03 driver. At first I thought it might be related to the fact I only have a PCIE x4 slot, but I borrowed a friends 8800gt and everything worked in the same system with the exact same setup. After reading all the pages I could I thought it might be a PowerMizer issue. When I check the NVIDIA X Server Settings though it is reporting it dropping to Performance Level 1 whenever I start a movie or run the qvdpautest program so I don't think that's the issue.

About mid way through the VDPAU testing tool thread two users described the same situation, but the only fix I could find in there was to purchase a different card.

Code:
qvdpautest 0.5
Pentium(R) Dual-Core CPU E5300 @ 2.60GHz
NVIDIA GPU GeForce 9800 GT (G92) at PCI:1:0:0 (GPU-0)

VDPAU API version : 1
VDPAU implementation : NVIDIA VDPAU Driver Shared Library 195.36.03 Mon Feb 1 19:22:18 PST 2010

SURFACE GET BITS: 660.234 M/s
SURFACE PUT BITS: 449.548 M/s

MPEG DECODING (1920x1080): 30 frames/s
MPEG DECODING (1280x720): 66 frames/s
H264 DECODING (1920x1080): 12 frames/s
H264 DECODING (1280x720): 27 frames/s
VC1 DECODING (1440x1080): 37 frames/s

MIXER WEAVE (1920x1080): 2326 frames/s
MIXER BOB (1920x1080): 3840 fields/s
MIXER TEMPORAL (1920x1080): 920 fields/s
MIXER TEMPORAL + IVTC (1920x1080): 565 fields/s
MIXER TEMPORAL + SKIP_CHROMA (1920x1080): 1265 fields/s
MIXER TEMPORAL_SPATIAL (1920x1080): 358 fields/s
MIXER TEMPORAL_SPATIAL + IVTC (1920x1080): 248 fields/s
MIXER TEMPORAL_SPATIAL + SKIP_CHROMA (1920x1080): 399 fields/s
MIXER TEMPORAL_SPATIAL (720x576 video to 1920x1080 display): 1262 fields/s
I forgot to save the output when I had the 8800gt in, but the H264 DECODING (1920x1080) was in the 40 frames/s range.

These results seem almost identical to rworne's on http://www.nvnews.net/vbulletin/show...133465&page=12.

Patmage, can you please attach an "nvidia bug report"; see the sticky posts.

How does a x16 PCI-Express card fit into a x4 slot? I thought cards/slots were keyed to make this impossible...

Re: Powermizer: You mentioned that VDPAU usage does increase the performance level to 1. Is that the maximum level that nvidia-settings shows, or do you have additional levels? Can you please post a screenshot of the nvidia-settings PowerMizer page when playing a video in VDPAU. Thanks.

Thank you for the reply. Sorry it is a PCI-E x16 slot, but it only runs at x4. Something I wish newegg would have stated more clearly, but that's another story.

I attached the bug report that I ran yesterday but forgot to attach to my initial post. Also I attached a screen shot of Powermizer. And yes, performance level 1 is the highest my 9800gt goes to. At the moment I have Preferred Mode set to Adaptive to watch that it does indeed drop to the higher level, but the problem is the same when set to Prefer Maximum Performance. Thanks.

Patmage, thanks for the information. I have filed a bug; we'll attempt to reproduce your problem.

Are you able to borrow the 8800GT again, and reproduce the problem and save an nvidia-bug-report; it'd be interesting to see if any differences show up.

Finally, could you run glxgears at the same time as qvdpautest, and see if that makes any difference? Thanks.

Default Re: 9800gt VDPAU issue

Hey guys, has anything happened since this time regarding this issue? I have the same card (EVGA 9800 GT) and am getting the exact same VDPAU results, using either the 190 or 195 drivers.

Video actually plays better when I avoid vdpau, although 1080p is right out under any circumstances.

The card seems to work great in every other way. These are my test results:

Code:
qvdpautest 0.5.1
Intel(R) Pentium(R) D CPU 3.20GHz
NVIDIA GPU GeForce 9800 GT (G92) at PCI:1:0:0 (GPU-0)

VDPAU API version : 1
VDPAU implementation : NVIDIA VDPAU Driver Shared Library 195.36.15 Fri Mar 12 01:18:10 PST 2010

SURFACE GET BITS: 825.16 M/s
SURFACE PUT BITS: 904.922 M/s

MPEG DECODING (1920x1080): 30 frames/s
MPEG DECODING (1280x720): 67 frames/s
H264 DECODING (1920x1080): 12 frames/s
H264 DECODING (1280x720): 27 frames/s
VC1 DECODING (1440x1080): 38 frames/s

MIXER WEAVE (1920x1080): 2349 frames/s
MIXER BOB (1920x1080): 4013 fields/s
MIXER TEMPORAL (1920x1080): 983 fields/s
MIXER TEMPORAL + IVTC (1920x1080): 629 fields/s
MIXER TEMPORAL + SKIP_CHROMA (1920x1080): 1309 fields/s
MIXER TEMPORAL_SPATIAL (1920x1080): 365 fields/s
MIXER TEMPORAL_SPATIAL + IVTC (1920x1080): 300 fields/s
MIXER TEMPORAL_SPATIAL + SKIP_CHROMA (1920x1080): 403 fields/s
MIXER TEMPORAL_SPATIAL (720x576 video to 1920x1080 display): 1272 fields/s

MULTITHREADED MPEG DECODING (1920x1080): 30 frames/s
MULTITHREADED MIXER TEMPORAL (1920x1080): 866 fields/s
Alternatively, is there anybody out there with an EVGA 9800gt that actually has decent results?

It looks like we have managed to reproduce the problem of poor performance on this card. However, we haven't yet managed to determine the cause.

Thanks for the quick reply Stephen. Do you know if this issue is something that's being looked at very often?

I imagine that if it only affects this one specific card it's pretty low priority, but the reason I ask is that I'm no longer using this PC for gaming (which this card was great at) but exclusively as an HTPC (for which I want VDPAU). I'm trying to decide whether I should just grab a budget vdpau-capable card or stick it out with this one...

redcandle, I'm sad to say that the quickest resolution to your problem is most likely to buy a different graphics card (since that will probably take just a few days).

Yeah, that's about what I figured.

While I've got your attention, it looks like I can get a 512MB 8400GS or a 512MB GT210 for about the same price... judging by the results in the vdpau test thread am I correct in assuming the 210 is the better buy for video?

Thanks again

Yes, I'd pick a VDPAU feature set C GPU over a VDPAU feature set A or B GPU these days (i.e. the 210 over the 8400 GS). That said, I think the 210 is a pretty low-end card. You will experience better post-processing performance (ability to use better de-interlacing algorithms, turn on denoise/... at the same time etc.) with a faster card. I see the GT 220 isn't a lot more, and would probably help in that area. Of course, judge your requirements against the test thread data to see what real-world performance will be, and whether that's necessary or not.
