Activision forced Infinity Ward's employees to continue producing the games at a breakneck pace under aggressive schedules, and West and Zampella were concerned that Activision was emphasising quantity over quality

The making and unmaking of Infinity Wards is Dean Takahashi's detailed history of Infinity Ward, starting with the circumstances that lead to the formation of the developer all the way through the firing of studio heads Vince Zampella and Jason West and the pair's subsequent lawsuit against Activision. The tale of intrigue includes Activision's investigation into whether secret negotiations were underway with EA, and that one of the acts of "insubordination" Zampella and West committed before being fired was refusing to surrender their cell phones and PCs. The story also recalls a relevant detail from the curious confusion during development over the game's name: "It is interesting in hindsight that Activision Blizzard vacillated during 2009 about whether to call the new game Call of Duty Modern Warfare 2 or just Modern Warfare 2. West and Zampella say that their employment agreement means that they have control over the Modern Warfare name and any use of their game technology." (From Bluesnews )

A couple of things left out and one big thing they got wrong.

1)IW split off from 2015 because they where mismanaged and almost went out of buisness. EA wanted to publish their (IW) games, however Grant Collier did not want to sell his sole and his employees soles to EA. They really tried to screw them over and Grant ran like hell. If it was not for another studio (Activision) IW almost ran out of money and where very close to closing themselfs.

2) IW never wanted to make another WWII game after CoD (1) , but Activision forced them via they funding to make another WWII game.

3) To this day, all CoD titles, including MW2 still uses the Quake III engine which is modified by IW. It's not IW's engine, it's IWs tech build on top of id's engine. If you look at any CoD franchise game's box, it still to this day (MW2) includes the "software technology licensed by id Technology".

1 and 2 came directly from Grant Collier, over dinner, before a movie and at the Modern Warfare PC community event at IW right before the release of Modern Warfare.

The big question right now, is where is Grant Collier, who left IW to work for Activision corporate right after the release of Modern Warfare? Calls to Activision state he works for IW, he does not. There was a press release saying he left for Activision and Vince and Jason where taking over IW for Activision.

Both IW and Activision think he works for the other division and do not know his whereabouts. I would assume, he took a big bonus after MW and is on a beach somewhere in the south pacific sipping on Margarettas and enjoying the sun far away from game development.

I love how you state that they avoided EA yet Activisions claims to firing West and Zampella was because they were in talks with EA to split off and make a new studio (allegedly).

I don't know how IW almost ran out of money considering that a year after being founded (or as their first title released) they were bought by Activision. Stop making Activision seem like the bad guy by stating they were forced to make games... they are the boss, IW makes good WW2 games and Activision wanted their studio to make another successful title. They should be lucky that they got as much control as they did.

IW in reality are not that great of developers. Like you mentioned to this day they continued to use technology based off the Quake 3 engine... thats sad. The engine is over 10 years old... and they continue to depend on it. What BS.

Grant Collier the founder of IW avoided EA before they where acquired by Activision.

In the early days while CoD was in development and privately funded, they shopped around for a publisher. This is when EA tried to take advantage of IW knowing they where running out of $$.

At the time in Grants eyes, Activision came along and saved their asses from both running out of money and big bad EA.

As for sticking up for IW, hell no. Jason West personally lied to my face at the MW2 Xbox event by saying PC would get mod tools, dedicated servers and how they wanted the community to help popularize MW2.

Also the know hatred towards Treyarch in regards to not giving them up to date code when World at war was released, thus letting Treyarch reinvent the wheel so to speak by fixing all the bugs that where in an earlier version of the code. Something that IW had already fixed but was unwilling to give Treyarch.

IW hates Treyarch with a passion and come off as spoiled little brats. Sorry I work for a 8 billion dollar company made up of a lot of smaller buisness units and see this attitude every day and can't stand it.

I'm all for Activision on this matter and hope Jason and Vince are laughed out of court. Then again I know how big corporations work and most of the time, they don't have all their ducks in a row.....

Again, I agree with Activision on letting both Vince and Jason go. Someone had to show them who runs the company as well as show IW to start playing nicely with other buisness partners, they are all on the same team.

IW think they are gods...Activision have brought them back down to earth and showed them who is boss. It will be interesting to see what happens next.

You know what would be funny? Now that these two are gone we see Mod Tools and Dedicated Servers released by Activision.
