So whats the difference between DX9 and DX10 modes in this? I can run DX9 decently with 3D Vision, but switching it to DX10 causes the fps to drop below playable. I think the only thing I've noticed different between the two is that DX10 has object motion blur.

These made a huge difference for SLI, but I guess they only improved the SLI efficiency and didn't improve single card performance at all

Here's a couple of pictures comparing tesselation on and off. This is with DX 11 enabled with High details, no advanced depth of field or Physx and no AA and 16x AF. With these settings the game is very playable as tesselation seems to only have a minimal performance hit compared to advanced depth of field which makes the game unplayable.

You can probably find a better thing to show off the differences easily, but even here with pictures taken pretty sloppily you can see differences on the monster (notice the lower part of the rib cage) and the character arms. NPCs have noticeably more polygons and you do see a difference on the monster when they're jumping at you since their muscles are more defined on all their limbs so they look leaner and meaner. I didn't take a picture of it, but on their backs their spine is much more defined with tessellation on. So the game is clearly using displacement mapping with tesselation and not just tessellation by itself like AvP did so there's a clear benefit to having it on and at least with my single 5870 the performance hit is so minor it's worth it.

Tesselation off

Tesselation on

well I finally got this game working. Every time I got to the first above ground part of the prologue (first level), my pc would reboot. This was with Sli and dx10 and 197.13 drivers. I solved the problem by temporarily disabling multi GPU mode in forceware drivers, then as soon as I got past the first level I enabled multi-gpu mode and have not had a problem since. pretty wierd.

I'm really enjoying this game, I'm playing dx10 on normal graphics settings with AAA enabled. This gives me a smoothness that feels just like I am playing MW2, ie, perfectly smooth.

nice atmosphere, you can certainly tell it's made by some of the stalker crew. there are definitely some sounds that are exactly the same as stalker.

it's pretty scary in places.

unfortunately, just like stalker but even more so, the guns are so quiet. Nothing increases the feeling of having a powerful gun in your hands more than a load firing "bang". these guns are so quiet.

Don't do that, just disable DX11 features but run in DX11 if you have to. The developer says that DX11 minus features runs better than DX10 maxed

I kind of like the advanced DoF effect unfortunately. I say unfortunately because the FPS hit is pretty big in most cases ranging from 3 to 30 FPS. But everything looks a little more crisp and "right" in some way, and the motion blur as better as well with A-DoF. It's hard to catch on screenshots but I'll be posting some in a few min.

Screenshots ready. All of them are in 1680*1050 very high, only difference is DX11 features. The following screenshots were not meant to be impressive or show off the game's most impressive scenes (they don't), but are purely meant as comparison for the DX11 settings. Game looks even better in-motion than on screenshots, it's somehow hard to capture. It's easily the best graphics I have seen since Crysis.

(Legend: DoF = Advanced Depth of Field, Tes = Tessellation. All titles refer to the image below)

TIP: Ctrl+Left click on a series of pictures, Press F11 to fullscreen browser, use Ctrl+Tab and Ctrl+Shift+Tab to switch back and fourth

1-1. DoF + Tes

1-2. Tes

1-3. DoF

1-4. None

Notice the tessellation in image series 2 here (cup, lamb, character model)
2-1. DoF + Tes

2-2 DoF

3-1 DoF + Tes

3-2 Tes

4-1 DoF + Tes

4-2 Tes

5-1 DoF + Tes

5-2 Tes

6-1 DoF + Tes

6-2 Tes

7-1 DoF + Tes

7-2 Tes

It's like with DoF ON a veil is lifted form the scene and it looks more crisp and brighter, while with DoF off the rooms looks like they're filled with a little more smoke, image looks less focused etc., the OPPOSITE of what I expected of FoV.

A few things you can't see in the pictures that DoF also adds is one good thing and one bad. The good: Motion blur is a little more pronounced somehow and better looking IMO. Also some smaller hard-to-describe changes as a result of slightly different, and improved, lighting/brightness/contrast and atmosphere. The bad: A little bit of mouse lag which I think is not related to the lower FPS.

Lets hope for a patch that lowers the performance hit of DoF and removes the bit of mouse lag it introduces, because until then I'm definitely playing without DoF, although I like the look of it.
