Default Freezes after upgrade from Fedora 10 to 12

I have a 9600 GT, and it worked fine on Fedora 10 with kernel 2.6.27.41-170.2.117.fc10.x86_64 and driver version 180.60. I upgraded to Fedora 12 and with the nvidia driver, my system freezes up. This tends to happen within about 10 minutes after starting X, but I can trigger it at will by running glxgears and resizing the window or playing a video with vdpau. In the syslog the freeze is accompanied by some "NVRM: Xid" errors as well as "irq 16: nobody cared" or "BUG: soft lockup - CPU#1 stuck for 61s!". One time I got blinking keyboard LEDs.

I'm running kernel 2.6.32.9-70.fc12.x86_64 and tried driver versions 190.53, 195.30, and 195.36.15. I also tried the legacy driver 173.14.22 and I tried kernel 2.6.31.5-127.fc12.x86_64. In all cases I get similar behavior. The nouveau driver is perfectly stable, as was my system on Fedora 10.

Here are some sample messages from /var/log/messages:

I connected in via ssh and ran the nvidia-bug-report.sh tool before and after one of the "irq 16: nobody cared" type errors (the ssh connection failed for the more serious errors).

Hi,

Can your problem be similar to this one: http://www.nvnews.net/vbulletin/showthread.php?t=148987
Try enable MSI and see if this improves your stability.

Actually, it looks like I just got lucky. Further tries have uptimes in minutes again.

Can you try another distribution, or a Fedora 10 kernel ? Just to see if that is specific to Fedora 12?

What kind of motherboard, memory and processor do you have? I started getting similar errors after an upgrade to F12, and it turned out to be, or it was at least fixed by replacing the processor, a Phenom 9850, with a Phenom II 965. It may have been a bad processor or at least F12 had a problem with it.

I'll do this when I have time (probably this weekend) but it would be helpful to have a live CD with the nvidia driver built in.

The last Fedora 10 kernel (2.6.27.41-170.2.117.fc10.x86_64) seems to be problem-free with driver version 195.36.15, but this isn't a good solution since this kernel doesn't work 100% with Fedora 12.

The latest Fedora 11 kernel (2.6.30.10-105.2.23.fc11.x86_64) also works, so I guess the problem starts to occur with 2.6.31.

Same problem here, Fedora 11 is the last Release that is stable as soon as the proprietary Nvidia driver comes into play.

Fedora 11 + Nvidia -> rock stable
Fedora 11 + Nouveau -> rock stable

Fedora 12 + Nvidia -> Freezes
Fedora 12 + Nouveau -> rock stable

Fedora 13 + Nvidia -> Freezes
Fedora 13 + Nouveau -> rock stable

I am aware of Nouveau blacklisting and the "IgnoreABI" switch acoording to the Nvidia guide for F13 Development as well as the RPM Fusion HowTo. Sometimes the system freezes right after GDM shows up, sometimes it works for hours, but most of the time it freezes within the first 10 minutes after login. Rebooting via SysRq is my only option then as I have no second machine for SSH access at hand.

Here are some suspicious (as far as I can see) log entries:

1) /var/log/messages

I am using a GTX 280 on a Gigabyte 965P-DS4 with an Intel C2D E6600 and 4GB MDT DDR2-RAM and since I had the hope that whatever causes the Freezes under F12 has been fixed I am using latest F13 Alpha with 195.36.15 right now for testing. Of course I also tried 195.36.08 before.

As an aside note I would like to mention that Ubuntu Lucid Beta1 with 195.36.08 seems to be not affected at all, at least I had several longer sessions without any freezes.

This is a "me-too" post (sorry). The only thing I can add is that I see this behavior in a system with an 8400GS but I have two other systems (7600GS and 6600) which are rock stable with "Fedora 12 + Nvidia".
