Your opinion on the GTX 470 & 480

Now that the information is available to us, what do you guys think?

Here's my opinion; I will wait for the refresh or another generation of gpus. Nvidia really needs to step up their processing power/performance for the money they are asking.

Agreed. The first impressions is that they are good cards, but not nearly as great as thier PR dept made them out to be....."surprise". Definately not worth the extra dough NVidia seems to be asking.

Things may change in the coming weeks, but for now I'll pass.......

I was ready to get a pair of 480's to improve my 3D gaming experience and even just upgraded my PSU to handle the power requirements but the heat and noise levels scare me. I am really disappointed.

If you have single or crossfire HD5850 or HD5870 buy another of those. If you're on GTX2xx or HD4xxx and you want a new card, you can't go wrong either way but Nvidia solution will cost you more money and much more power requirement and heat to deal with. I have no idea how people are going to deal with enormous heat 4xx cards produce.

In the games I'd like an improvement in the 480 is 2-3 times the speed of my GTX 260, but the heat and power consumption is definitely a big drawback.

If it was $450, it'd be easier to swallow... but with the 5870 being $100-$150 cheaper and being FAR more efficient, its tough to make a decision.

The overclocked performance of the 480 seems to be pretty awesome (firingsquad saw roughly 15-20% performance increase) but that means even MORE heat and power consumption.

I'm just not sure yet.

I'd really like a new card, but honestly, $500 is quite a bit of money and it STILL can't play every game with a reasonable frame rate at 1920x1200 with max settings and no AA.

Well, the good news is that it is indeed faster than the 5870!

The bad news is that it uses way too much power, gets too hot, and is pretty expensive for the 10-20% performance increase. On top of that, according to every review site, this card is LOUD! Probably the most depressing part about this card, though, is that somehow Crysis seems to be a tick faster on the 5870...

I seriously wanted Nvidia to be better in all areas, or at worst be able to justify the power and heat output by producing some seriously impressive numbers. However, I'm just not seeing it.

I'll be keeping my 5870 this time. Sorry guys.

The first few reviews I read basically made it seem they were nothing special.

Anandtech's review on the other hand which I finally managed to read (they have AWFUL server load issues right now), seems to put things in a different light. They appear to have the most favorable review so far. H's review, which I usually read for playability reasons, shows almost the exact POV. Hexus seems to be a little in the middle but more towards H's, except they didn't have a 470.

So all in all, the card runs the gamut from disappointing and late and hot and power hungry to, pretty good and late and hot and power hungry.

But even the latter may not be such a bad thing.

AT's power draw conclusion left me a little disappointed. Why have all the cards displayed in the list and then use the size of the PSU disclaimer just for the Nvidia cards?

I don't have a 1200W psu and I am highly unlikely to personally get a dual-card configuration, but I would have loved to see the overall scaling without the disclaimer for ALL the cards. Is Ryan saying they had a different configuration for the other cards, as in a different PSU, during testing?

Yeah I can see folks that don't have a 5850 or 70 grabbing a 470.

480 SLi is definitely boss in some situations and I can't afford to drop 1k on cards right now.

Well, I'm fairly certain I'm going to get a 480. I'm running SLI 260's right now, but I want some DX11 goodness, and don't want to play around with 3rd party patches to get physx to work with an ati card.

The question is to drop $1,000 on two 480's or just go with one...This is going to be paired with a Core i7 975 @ 4.0GHz.
