Didn't they compare it to HD 4870X2 in some reviews? I don't remember this much fuss, when that card came out.

Taken from CB.de:
Code:
HD 4870X2 65.5 dB
GTX 295 65 dB
HD 4890 64 dB
GTX 480 63 dB
HD 5970 59.5 dB

from the quick look at the reviews i have seen

there is very little difference between a 295 and a 480 with existing titles

the only thing i can see a 480 would be worth me updrading to is for DX11 and to me tessellation isnt exactly much of a difference fromt he screenshots iv seen

There was a lot of fuss about the noise levels when the 4870x2 and 4890 came out. Same goes for the 5800-series which imho is too loud with the stock cooler.

After reading a couple reviews I decided to pre-order the EVGA GTX 470 as I needed a card to go with the Dell U2410 ultra sharp monitor that I also ordered yesterday. The issue with the heat and power does not concern me as I`m upgrading from a Vapor-X 4890 OC that also runs a little hot. I have a EVGA GTS 250 that I plan on using as a dedicated PhysX card and it idles at 34 c.

Now that nVidea has launched their new lineup there is competition in the market place once again and that is good for consumers. Choose your poison and let the games begin.

It depends on the test method really. GTX 295 might be more quiet most of the time, but when it peaks, it might be more noisy.

I was just thinking, isn't this a good time to start benchmarking more like this?

That's a great example of how reviews should be done! Minimum FPS don't mean much without knowing if it was just for a second or a longer period of time. This is why I like [H]'s reviews because they include graphs showing the fps for any given time.

EDIT: About that dB graph - the dB levels don't really tell you how annoying the sound is. A lower decibel card might even sound worse than a card with higher dB levels.

How are you getting these % that you keep tossing out there? I see nothing in that graph that represents a 50% lower minimum over a sustained period on the 5870. I don't even see a single touch point where it's 50% lower?

Look at the frame counter at the bottom of that graph. That place that you reference lasted no more than 1-2 frames. This goes back to what I was saying before in that you need to view the entire graph and take into account all frames instead of just looking at one tick mark.

I love how he keeps posting these graphs with insane settings...

So heres a question... Stay with my current setup or switch to XFire 5850 or a single 5870? GTX 480 is out of the question since its $100 more then the 5870 and offers very little improvement.
