Default Re: Your opinion on the GTX 470 & 480

My opinion, the 4xx series are a step in the right direction, their tessalation (and geometry) and dx 11 perf is defenitly promising and I think there will be massive gains in future drivers. It often takes 0,5-1 year to fully fine tune the drivers due complexity of new hardware and games/api's.

The Fermi perf is shifting a lot in a wide selection of games for now, from awesome to meh/ok.

The architecture is very good, but they didn't get the proces where they want right now, hence the high power usage.

I'll buy two GTX480's in SLI, I'm addicted at tech and GFX. And physicX, while it's not widely used, they got at least something.

Oh, forgot to mention that I am trying to see if I can deal with the cons of these cards.

1. Price - I don't plan on getting raped for over MSRP so I am conceding the $1000+tax for SLI. My quarterly bonus is paying for one of the cards so that lessens the pain somewhat.

2. Noise - I am already used to the noise my GTX 295 makes with the fans running at 100% as well as what my 2x8800GTX cards did. I tend to crank the sound up loud when I game during the day or I wear my 5.1 headphones, especially at night. I give up some true bass but the ambience is unbeatable when playing first person games in S3D.

3. Power Consumption - I am used to running my AC at 65 degrees most of the year here in Texas anyway so the extra wattage cost isn't a big deal for me.

4. Heat - This is the one that has me concerned a bit. I am not worried so much about the heat in my room as much as the heat the cards will endure and in my PC case in general. I know I can get a lifetime warranty with someone like EVGA so there is no way I am getting any cards without that. I notice some of the temp test results that I have seen show that my 295 runs almost as hot but then I am only running a single card and not two.

Bleh, I hate having to rationalize all of this lol.

Yeah and his case has better cooling by the looks of it. His case has a fan on the side blowing straight as the cards, as well as the three in front.. And as I said, that is only one part of the whole equation.

If you look at the front open door of the case I have three 140mm fans blowing 72cfm each, straight towards the cards and cpu.

Hoping my side fans will do the trick. Hopefully mine being blue and not green won't impact the airflow any!

Same here, 3D vision is my biggest reason for getting a couple of 480's in SLI. Can't wait for them to come on the market.
