I only ment to put the temps of the the 480 in perspective. Almost everyone was of the opinion that this would cause havoc with there systems. But they aren't that much different than the last couple of generations.

I can't comment on the 4870x2 or 480 fan noise, because i haven't heard either running.

Does the eye to monitor distance influence the 3D effect on your current setup?

Not that I have seen. I usually sit around 1.5 to 2 feet from my screen. I have tried closer and further away and it makes no difference to the 3D affect.

My opinion about GTX4x0:

Too hot
Too expensive
Too slow
Too late
Too power hungry
Too noisy

EPIC FAIL!!!!!

Edit; even if the GTX470 was 250 euros instead of 550, I would rather have a HD5870.

I don't think nV will sell a lot of these cards. HD5000 is way, WAY better!

.
It's not to slow. It is faster on the whole than the 5870.

I don't think it's an overall fail tbh. It has some very good points but I'm not going to get past the heat this time round

The 5970 costs about the same, and is way faster. HD5850 CFX is cheaper than a GTX480 and, is faster.

10% more performance than a HD5870 is not enough for the noise, powerconsumption and heat you'll get form the card.

Edit; overclock the HD5870, and you'll have the same performance...

Too bad, because I am a nV fan. But I don't want a GTX400 card. It's a huge disappointment for me.

The 5970 is $200 dearer than the 480 down here.

Overclock the 5870 and yes it probably is faster. But you didn't take into consideration, that you can overclock the 480 as well.

It looks like overall system power consumption may be quite reasonable, especially with GTX 470.

Here is what Hardware Canucks showed regarding idle/load power consumption:

In that chart, the total system power consumption using GTX 470 is within 5% of the total system power consumption using HD 5870 at idle, and the total system power consumption using GTX 470 is within 10% of the total system power consumption using HD 5870 at load. And in turn, the total system power consumption using GTX 480 is within 13% of the total system power consumption using GTX 470 at idle, and total system power consumption using GTX 480 is within 11% of the total system power consumption using GTX 470 at load.

And here is what Hardware Canucks showed regarding idle/load temperatures:

In that chart, GTX 470 is within 4% of HD 5870 w/ respect to idle temperature, and GTX 470 is within 11% of HD 5870 w/ respect to load temperature. And in turn, GTX 480 is within 12% of GTX 470 w/ respect to idle temperature, and GTX 480 is within 3% of GTX 470 w/ respect to load temperature.

On a side note, several websites have noted in their reviews that there is an unusually large drop in performance for the GTX 470/480 when moving from 1920x1200 to 2560x1600, with a wide variety of games. According to Hardware Canucks, NVIDIA is aware of the issue, and will be issuing a new driver next month to fix that. So hopefully things will get much better from here.

By the way, Hardware Canucks seems to agree that the GTX 470 provides excellent bang for the buck:

ATI's excuse about the final code is really lame. The game's out for about two weeks and their still not ready. I can understand when a game is not working perfectly but ATI's Metro performance is useless.

A single 480 is IMO the perfect card right now. Getting two anyway
It might be if it wasn't for all the negatives. While I understand you are a diehard Nvidia fan (as I am myself most of the time), there comes a point where you have to take the blinders off and excercise some objectivity.

The 480 is far from 'the perfect card'. Most of the Metro benches I've seen have the 5870 running Metro just fine (albeit slower) but if you're going to be at all realistic, the ATI performance will improve.

I'm sure the Nvidia refreshes will be a lot better and I will buy several provided the heat issues have been dealt with at that point.

I'm not trying to have a go at you mate, I'm glad you are enthusiastic about the cards, but calling them perfect is an exaggeration in my book.

There, that might have something to do with it but even so I still don't believe you, my GTX280 would load at 85+ in a open case during winter so to say I'm sceptical is an understatement, these cards run hot.
