I think I will be getting a 5870 very soon. The fact that it is a lot cheaper and the performance is near the 480's, is a sign that I should go back to ATI. I haven't owned an ATI card since the X1900xtx.

Thoughts:

Overpriced and overheated.

Reminds me a lot of the R600 (2900XT) launch although Fermi isn't as much of a disappointment. It's a mixed bag in performance, technically inferior (no angle-independent AF) and runs hot... way hot. And it uses FAR too much power. The power consumption is down right ridiculous for the performance that you get/don't get. Seems to be very inefficient. When it loads more wattage than a 5970 does while losing most benches by 30-35% on average to it, that's not good.

I expect that die-hard Nvidia fans will probably purchase one or two, but for anyone who is bipartisan I really can't think of a reason to justify purchasing a 480 over a 5870 (or 5970) for gaming unless you're just stuck on 3D Vision or are one of the rare folks who seem to have problems with ATI drivers left and right. 5870 just seems far more refined. And it's much cheaper, to boot.

ATI won this gen, but Nvidia will be back. Fermi is a decent option for those who just want Nvidia hardware in their systems. I just hope those people know how to cool a case.

I agree with you Xion X2.

I've had little to no problems with my 5870, and the gaming performance on this card is wonderful for the money I paid for it over 3 months ago.

There is a reason that AMD has said they aren't planning on any price drops. There's simply no reason to do such a thing at this time.

The only thing that stops me from going to ATI is their drivers. Is ATItools compatible with the 5870? If so then I am going to buy a card next Friday.

I must admit I already bought a 5870 about a week ago. Haven't mentioned it here yet but it looks like I made the right decision. I haven't had any driver issues and have been pretty happy with it. I got it for around the same price as a GTX 470.

I hate to admit it but Charlie was mostly right in regards to power usage, heat, and noise. He was a little off target with performance and other aspects and appears to be totally wrong abought about quantity/availability.

I haven't really had problems with either Nvidia or AMD drivers honestly

What is it that you are concerned about?

He's a FUD merchant and even a broken clock is right twice a day.

The fact is that the 480 is unimpressive. There were so many rumours floating around and I chose to wait until today before making my decision as opposed to listening to people on either side of the fence who have their own agendas.

The proof is in the pudding as they say

I remember always getting CTD when in games. I used to get some error about some ati program stopped responding or something like that.

I'm an ATI guy but unlike R600, the GTX480 does have the performance to back it up. Still the cost is quite high in so many ways.

I am kind of glad that Fermi is a disappointment though. It's good to see ATI back in the competition. Competition is always good.

The heat is scaring me the most.. i've just had to RMA my GTX280 because it decided to overheat to 105C (the old problem that haunted the GTX280 just decided to show its ugly head now!).. Also if the fan noise is much worse that the GTX280 than we have another big problem.. is any review compared the fan noise of the 480 to the 280 or 285?
