Default Re: Your opinion on the GTX 470 & 480

My resistance lasted all of a few days, and I pre-ordered two EVGA GTX 480s. I also ordered a 120mm fan for the side fan slot in my Antec 900. Hopefully that will be enough to help keep the temps down along with the other case fans. I already have my GTX 280 fans going full bore 100% all the time, so the sound isn't an issue.

I've got the card and i can tell you it doesn't get that noisy unless you run Furmark (90C) but under normal load ie while playing games the cars usually hovers between 70-75C and the fan is defo a lot quieter than the 4870X2/5970 or even the 4890.
interesting, i would like to hear more about that, is furmark the only thing that can push them to 90c?

Hmm... you know, I'm still on the fence about these things.

If I can get one with a good 3rd party cooling solution for under $500 I might do it.

Someone previously in this thread said they ordered or someone they knew ordered from these guys before and had no problems. Plus they are $10 below the MSRP, and even after shipping, I still paid less than $1000 for them.

Ahhh! Great idea... I completely forgot that the side-fan slot of my Antec Nine Hundred is sans fan at the moment! What did you get? I was looking at the Noctua, but I'm not sure if it really makes a difference - a fan is a fan?

Here's a good roundup of 120mm fans - 35 models compared.

Here is what Hardware Canucks showed regarding idle/load power consumption:

In that chart, the total system power consumption using GTX 470 is within 5% of the total system power consumption using HD 5870 at idle, and the total system power consumption using GTX 470 is within 10% of the total system power consumption using HD 5870 at load. And in turn, the total system power consumption using GTX 480 is within 13% of the total system power consumption using GTX 470 at idle, and total system power consumption using GTX 480 is within 11% of the total system power consumption using GTX 470 at load.

And here is what Hardware Canucks showed regarding idle/load temperatures:

In that chart, GTX 470 is within 4% of HD 5870 w/ respect to idle temperature, and GTX 470 is within 11% of HD 5870 w/ respect to load temperature. And in turn, GTX 480 is within 12% of GTX 470 w/ respect to idle temperature, and GTX 480 is within 3% of GTX 470 w/ respect to load temperature.

Ok, first off, why are you comparing the 470 to the 5870 at all? The 470 is the direct competition to the 5850. And since when, if you are comparing the 470 with the 5870, is a slower card using more power and putting out more heat "reasonable"?

5850 idle:174w/41c load:252w/77c
470 idle:185w/44c load:354w/92c
5870 idle:177w/43c load:322w/83c

Also who cares how close the load temps of the 480 are to the 470?...look at the difference between the 480 and the 5870!

5870: 43c/83c
480: 49c/95c

I've never in my life bought an Ati video card, and even I'm getting sick of all the people with blinders on concerning Nvidia. No matter how hard you guys try to spin these negatives into positives it ain't gonna happen. If you want to talk performance or price, you have an argument, but will never get any sane person to believe there is anything reasonable about the heat or power that these cards use, because there is nothing reasonable about it...nothing.

From one Nvidia fanboy (or so i've been told a million times) to another...get over it. Quit trying to gloss over glaring faults with these cards. Highlight the positives, by all means, but don't try and piss on our heads and tell us it's raining.

Eh, I just got another one of the same Antec fans already in my case:

Blue LED light to match the other fans, and different speed settings.
