"new drivers will fix this" ...the final, desperate hope of the fan after a disapointing graphics card release...

Hardly disappointing! Huge gains, more features, forward looking tech. ATI fanbois will cringe as Fermi gets better and better and they're stuck with yesterday's news. But that's been the story for years. It hurts to be 2nd best in a 2 man race.

I guess that I might as well post my official thought - so far. Leaving out the feeling of resentment that most of us have right now towards the way nvidia has dealt with this fiasco.

I think the the 480 is a fine card. Power draw and Heat aren't necessarily deal breakers for me. One reason I may be okay with power consumption would be if tessellation takes off. That would help the gaming lifespan of the card. Tessellation is the most intriguing feature these days (to me). SLI from what I've seen seems to be scaling well. I really would need to see more time in unbiased reviewers hand's. As much as I trust Nvidia, i wouldn't be surprised if the card's they finally release - are slower than what we just saw.

If I didn't have my 5970, id probably be on the fence.
Since I do, why do i need more.

Has anyone done an oc 480 three way against oc 5970 crossfire yet, already?
Just curious.

I am not disappointed by the Fermi myself, but I think you're wrong in saying ATi is 2nd.

At worst they're tied. And they came out 6 months earlier.

This coming from someone who won't buy ATi, either. I really don't like them. They did beat NV to market, and they do have a superior product (going by reviews and from people who own the cards).

They'll get better and better. The louder the ATI fanbois squeal, the sweeter it is. One thing I've always like about Nvidia is they absolutely dominate the professional user by almost 4 to one.

In the end though, the GeForce GTX 480 is a graphics card that kicks ass, it is without doubt the fastest single GPU based graphics card on the block. The performance is grand and impressive and well, it's just a sick card to play all modern games with at any resolution or image quality preference.

Also from guru

Admittedly while very strong, both the GeForce GTX 470 and 480 are not a slam dunk homerun compared to the fastest ATI 5800 series single GPU solutions.

stubborn pride is such an unfortunate affliction. but stubborn pride in someone elses achievements is just sad.

Touche'.

Fermi is a good card, not great. A great card would hold the single-GPU performance crown while consuming less than 100w more than its nearest competitor (5870) which actually beats it in some benchmarks. A great card would consume less power than a dual-GPU 5970 which beats it in nearly all benchmarks.

Fermi is a hell of a performer, and it does appeal to me somewhat for being a single GPU card while doing it. But it's inefficient as all hell at the moment. That may not matter to some folks like mtl, but it's majority opinion that it factors into the overall impression that a card gives to its audience. Not all of us take so kindly to all the excess heat it dumps into our cases or into our rooms--especially when there's a competing product on the market that doesn't struggle nearly as much in that area.
