A great card would consume less power than a dual-GPU 5970 which beats it in nearly all benchmarks.

Fermi is a hell of a performer, and it does appeal to me somewhat for being a single GPU card while doing it. But it's inefficient as all hell at the moment. That may not matter to some folks like mtl, but it's majority opinion that it factors into the overall impression that a card gives to its audience. Not all of us take so kindly to all the excess heat it dumps into our cases or into our rooms--especially when there's a competing product on the market that doesn't struggle nearly as much in that area.

agree. Fermi is no 8800GTX. It's more like a 7800GTX. A "great" card should close to double the performane of the last flag ship card. and it should easily beat the last dual-card solution. it should also be cooler and draw less power than the previous generation dual card solution.

for amazing performance go SLI
http://www.hardocp.com/article/2010/...0_sli_review/8
More relevant still is the awesomeness of GeForce GTX 480 SLI performance
GeForce GTX 480 SLI allows Crysis Warhead to be playable at 2560x1600 4X AA/16X AF all Enthusiast settings. Take that to the bank, GTX 480 SLI is the real deal.

NVIDIA rules the schoolyard when it comes to multi-GPU scaling. CrossFire gets left with a black eye.

Nvidia stomps ATI under hobnailed boots.

You got a good computer anyway as is, there's really not any games that will use alot of the new stuff for a long while anyways.

Yep.

Don't forget... ATI now has an HD 5870 Eyefinity 6 model that can drive 6 monitors!

Nvidia, with 2 GTX 470/480's, can drive.... 3.

But honestly, for gaming, 3 or more screens require more power than a single GPU anyway. Otherwise you'd be better off with a single large 1080p screen.
I'm not all that enthralled with the idea of more than 2 monitors. So the ATi thing does
nothing for me.

It is what I thought it would be ,a little faster then the HD5870 ,draws a lot of power ,runs hot and the fan will be loud, and there want be no decent quanities until May.I got a 1100watt coolerMaster so I could run a couple of them ,but since I wanted to get away from a loud computer ,I think I will wait for thier next cards with a smaller die and hopely run cooler .My two Gigabyte HD5870 with the heat pipes and two fans are quiet ,I can not hear them over my case fans .Even stressing them out the fan does'nt go above 23% and even if you manually turn the fans up to 100% they are still quite. They have no problem running at 900/5000,will go higher but I see no point and just run them at default. The GTX 480 is a good card if you can get over the down falls I mention.I like nvidia control pannel better ,but I will get used to ATi control pannel,Maybe next time around I will go back to nvidia ,but I have no regrets with my purchase of two HD5870's.

Id hold judgment on Eyefinity untell you sit down with it for yourself. Ive not had 1 person say they didnt like it. Or it bothered them that used it at my house. And TBH I had 2 5870s in crossfire for Eyefinity. 1 card is still more then playable. and hardly even noticed the 2nd card missing.

The problem is as that one card is just not capable of driving the displays at that resolution. Nvidia's approach requires at least two cards and due to the higher framebuffer they are better suited for the task. Seen some reviews of eyefinity and it doesn't seem to run that smoothly.
The immersion should be great though!

Having three display outputs is also great for HTPCs. I really hope it becomes the new standard.
