Yeah Nekro I understand, I’m thinking more of the ambient heat inside a case more than the actual threshold of the GPU.

I’m giving serious consideration to a single GTX480, but the idle temps and overall heat at loads have me a bit concerned.

I have to agree there.

I want one already, but... dang. I was happy to have the noise and heat output of my system drop dramatically when going from an 8800GTX to a GTX260... this will be quite the opposite.

Remember the 5970 was suppose to sell for $600 - $625 when it came out, so I wouldn't count on the 480 selling for $500. Probably closer to $600.

Disable depth of field and tesselation = problem solved. It's not AA that's killing your performance, I don't think.

Ughhh, those temps are a deal breaker for me (and that is only one card in that photo).

Looks like too little, too late - at least for this round.

Hopefully the refreshes will address the heat issues as there is no way I am putting a card that runs at 101 degrees in my box (let alone 2).

It isn't as bad when you look at the whole situation in that screenshot. FurMark is the most demanding benchmark on the GPU in terms of really raising that core temperature, the 480 being benchmarked is OC'ed 100 MHz past stock on the core (800 vs 700), and his fan is at 80%.

Yeah, the benches need to specify the settings very clearly. And I wish they would bench apples to apples with PhysX.

Metro was running very good on my friend's system. I was quite impressed given how good the game looked. Can't test it on my box yet as it's still in build mode.

Looks like you've gotten your wish, slawter. The 480s are pretty stout. Just make sure you cool them well so they won't burn up on you after a few months.

Kudos to NV for bringing the pain with a single GPU.

It is that bad, at least IMHO. My Tri SLI hits 90 in the 2nd Phase of Vantage (towards the end of the Asteroids, spaceship portion).

That's three cards that are side by side. In this case, a single card with a heat pipe is hitting 101 and the performance really doesn't look like it is that much better than the 5870 (although we still don't have official numbers to be fair).

For me, that's not acceptable. I don't usually mind cards that run hot but that is very hot for a single card.
